Hi to all,
i am struggling to understand the workings of garages following my recent visit; it is a garage that i have used for the last 4 years. i had a service and mot on my FL2 (2013) 2.2 TD4; one minor issue to be replaced but ultimately passed. However i was told that diagnostics had flagged a Maf sensor to be replaced.
The reason for this is that prior to taking the car to the garage a warning light came on the dash (red triangle with exclamation mark inside); presumed due to lack of power on acceleration, This was replaced but after leaving the garage and 2 miles into my journey the same warning light appeared on my dash.
I contacted the garage and was advised to bring the car back for further diagnostics. The result was to replace the mass airflow sensor (£225 without labour),
I agreed for this to be done (garage didn't charge labour) but i was told afterwards the turbo has gone but could be changed for £1300. I was also told that the car will work perfectly but not foot down acceleration.
To my horror the same warning light has appeared on the dash with the added (intermittent) engine management light on the dash.
Am i just having the worst of bad luck!!!

Maybe the MAF wasn't the actual cause and was a unrelated issue?
Sure someone with Freelander experience will be along soon.

Hi Finian.
No bad luck but maybe being took for a fool, from reading above the garage said they already changed the MAF, then when you drove it again the light came back on, so the result was again to change the Mass Air Flow sensor, £225.

The cost of the MAF is quite low, no more than £50 after all it's a ford MAF.

Take it to another garage when was the fuel filter last changed, was it by the same garage if it was in the last 12 months, i presume they checked the throttle to see if the cogs are worn or butterfly is sticking most likely not, why are they saying turbo what symptoms are they giving? seems to me they are out of their depth.

As above!! MAF no more than £50!!

......Ask for a breakdown on the invoice and receipt??.....🤔🤥🤔

Second opinion at another garage! Ask them to delete history?

Check the map! Check the air filter! Then check the turbo?? After diagnostic test??

Kev

Surely the cost depends if its genuine or not?
Genuine seems to be that sort of price with a quick Google.
Sort of a moot point if it didn't fix it anyway.

I have no idea of MAF sensor cost but they are very easy to change. As pictured it is fitted to airbox and secured by two torx screws, T20 ? Could they have meant MAP sensor which is a little more difficult ?
A PCM clear should have been run on a diagnostic to clear the fault code once changed.

Apologies for the delay in responding and I thank you all for your contributions. Suffice to say that the warning lights remained on after paying £225 for a new airflow sensor (so angry). However good news; I took car to a recommended garage and the diagnosis was a blown from hose to the turbo; now the car is running like a dream.
Should I ask for a refund or compensation; report garage to the ombudsman or take it on the chin?

That is a toughy, I am sure the first garage will say they done their best and did the repair you agreed upon.
I would go back explain what the issue was and cost, but go with the expectation of receiving nothing but with the attitude of helping them out. It may save a future customer and they may be glad of the info.

If it was the same garage then ask them to have the MAF back reinstate your original, and refund, if not then send email pointing out you are not happy with their diagnosis and the part fitted so as a good will gesture would they reinstate your old MAF and refund if not how about a partial refund maybe half of the price you can but try. T

This will be the hose they have replaced then below.

I have the above in my spare box just in case along with other parts for the FL2

Hi guys, thank you for your endearing comments and advice. I can confirm following a conversation with the owner of the garage I was offered (as a goodwill gesture) a 50%refund which I gladly accepted.
I attach a photo of the split pipe, located at the front of the engine. I did check on you tube and found a particular company (Powerful UK) that showed fault and cure that was a mirror of my issue; a good site.
Once again, thank you.
