Hi,we've had the freelander (05 td4 sport) for about 12 months now and frankly are a bit bored. OK the question ,do i get a series 2/3 or a 90.Will only be doing about 1000 miles at most a year,just for taking the mutts out.Budget is about £2000 give or take a bit.
Hope you can help.
P.S any major pitfalls to look out for?

Go for a Defender, rather than a Series - they really are a quantum leap forward.
200 or 300 TDi if you can get it, although for £2000, a good one might take some finding.
Faults to look for are the usual stuff - rotten chassis & bulhead, gearbox clunks, excessive smoke, injun knocks etc. The beauty is that, provided these basics are OK, other parts are cheep and easy to fix.

Series, spesh if it's just fer fun. Buuuuuuuuuut if haven't driven one, do. You might hate it! Buuuuuuuut, you might also love it!

if yu bin driving a Hippoo - a series or even a depender is cave-man stuff in comparison. Drive both and see what you are more comfortable with.. There are 90's and deependers out there for 2k or less but yu do need to be critical and know what you are talkin about when looking. Good luck and have fun.

FFS Daft you got you yours & you've been unlucky, very unlucky. :rolleyes:

He's bin driving a hippo & he's bored. Driving series landies is a larf, spesh when you aren't using it for every day transport (which I am & it's still a larf). It's like a big meccano kit & (so long as the problem isn't electrical, or is it the carbs, or is it electrical, or is it the carbs?) it's easy to fix & just generally mess about with.

The chances of finding a 90 or espesh a Tdi that isn't a pile of festering rust are very very slim. IF you know exactly what you're looking for & look at loads and loads you may get lucky and find a reasonable 90. If by contrast he drives a Series, does find it a larf and wants to spend 2K on one he's a really good chance of finding a well cared for motor on a good if not galv chassis.

So there! ;)

I must say that everytime i get in me car or fix someat on me series 3, I just cant stop smiling. Great fun car.

Cheers everyone, should have some fun looking,what do you think of ex mod landys? Are they worth a look? .... or not:)
 
They're all worth a look if they sound ok! Ex-military ones were maintained well during their working life but may have had either an easy life or a hard one, no way of telling, same as civvies!

Try to speak at length to the seller before you go any distance, if they sound dodgy they probably are! Can save you a lot of miles.
 
At 2k i would go 4 a series and prob try get a tax free 1. Agree with a prev poster if you want long trips that a 90 is a better vehicle but at 2k you will get a load a trouble and may loose money, a tax free series will hold its value, cheep to insure, cheep bits, and easyer to fix. Get a diesel n run it on chip fat n you will save a packet while exciting yer dogs. I think a cheap 90 will become an expensive 1 in the long run, a series is also best 4 a bloke who owns a few tools, a cheap 90 will help the local mechanics pay for new tools.
