wouldnt a larger AH alternator and split charger and a deep cycle marine batt do the same job?

I think it's a case of horses for courses, if you have the bolt holes and space(air con pump not there) to install another, why not. if not split charger and decent batteries are equally as good.
I feel a discussion/argument coming on.

er in some way, but if you read the post (Now Added below) about why a two battery and two alternator that I posted, you may understand why I think a second alternator is better and is not much different in cost to do.... the 300tdi Discovery already has a 100 amp alternator on.

lol hello, mention the devil and he shall apear

You can use them in parallel, the only problem is that if for some reason on goes tits up or there is a power drain both get drained down, that's why.

My answer is run one off a second alternator, a number of reasons.

1. it means that the system is always self sufficient,
2. It means you always got a spare alternator with you.
3. If your main alternator fails and sizzes up solid you can in a few minutes replace it , as with a 300tdi engine the fan belt also drives the PAS pump, and the water pump.......I ve had that happen when out off roading.

if you got a 300tdi engine its the way i would go......as it happens I am just working on making a bracket for it

Granted some Landys have an air con pump in place so will not be able to use this method..... and a split charger is the way to go.

Stu did you get anymore pics today.

Na forgot my camera, took that one on my Phone while waiting for a tug.

I agree with you Geoff, its what you think the best method is, split charger is just as good, it still runs your aux circuits just as well, it starts just as well, the parallel system has it own problems tho, but cheep and simple,

Fan tastic, cheers mate! I need to get a bigger battery first! (the one I've got is out of a fiat 127 I reckon!

I worry if I have to flash my lights incase it drains it! Not to good if winching out of somewhere!

Am gonna look at getting 2 batteries and a split charge system.

Fitted split charge system in mine, not a difficult or expensive job, apart from the price of the cable, might pay you to nick some off the local railway, that would also stop those Suffolk gits getting into Essex by train.

ok thanks big stu appoligies didnt correctly read ur post :(

Thats ok, the thread is a fast moving thread, it is hard, when your a newbie to it, it easy to miss a meaning, or miss the answer totally, more often or not the guys in here are a mine of information, and an answer comes out quick.

Some people have too much time on their hands and need to do something.(Stu!!!!)

yeah this time last year I had too much money no time.... this year too much time no money................

Last year I would have just located a product from a supplier and brought it, lol, this year hands are dirty to save sheckles

Lol ok cool glad you spotted the newbie part as franticly trying to get involved with the off road scene and get my landdy as never done this b4 and want to collect as much info as i can and like all newbs i have a raft of questions the likes of what you lot im sure have answered many times b4 . why not a V8 ? would you use an Auto for off roading?

V8 yes nice sound....

High fuel costs, High maint costs, get it anywere near water or anything wet and they cut out.

Yeah of course an auto can be used for off road, there are loads, it's not realy what's best, it what you like loads of us use Auto's

As far as mods go get a decent set of tyres, diff gaurds, recovry points front and rear, a GOOD tow rope (not tescos......lol), oh yeah a snorkel and breathers, then go out and learn to drive off road before spending loads on something you may not need

would milage bother you ? im seeing 2.5TD Disco's with over 200,000 miles

some would buy one some would not, me.... I would not, just also depends on what you got to spend, but you got to remember the more work the more wear, the thing your really have to look out for is rust......... everywere.......

you got a welder now, you could take a pattern of fixing brackets off mine, get a pre made winch tray and buy some HD tube and go for it. Sure you've got the know how.

Geoff I like that idea, will have a nosie at yours next weekend when we destroy matt's motor:D:D:D
Was Just thinking of letting matt do it cause it needs to be strong and me welding ain't up to scratch yet:D
How ya getting on with the welding?

Got one slider cut and shaped, got sent the wrong tips so couldnt do any welding yesterday, gonna try and have a go tomorrow, will have a couple of hours of practice and get the mig set up right then have a go. Got the gas and mask from the guy in Purfleet he was really helpful.
The fixings on the bumper are really straight forward the time consuming thing would be cutting the shapes. not unless you know someone with a plasma cutter.

Mileage would not bother me too much. Mine is 173K now.
A high milage one with 1 or 2 owners is likely to have been looked after. You could end up with a low mileage one thats had 10 owners and none of them have bothered to service it

V8, I would love, but I also love playing in water.
If I could turn back the clock I would buy an early 300 tdi no EDC, ABS or cleaver eletrics. The more basic the better. I hunted high and low for an ES, which is what I have. Its got all the mod cons:
Electric seats - don't work
heated seats - don't work
Two electric sunroofs - only one works.
heated front screen - don't work
CD multiplayer - dont want.
Fog lights - I cut them off.

You get the idea.

Transmission is personal choice.
Autos are better for hill climbs, but a manual is better for the descent.

If you think you may end up modifying it. Save yourself some money and time and buy with the toys already.
