Like the comments said - 1989 model disco (basically 80's technology) against a 2001 model Espace. Not comparing apples with apples really is it. I'm sure a 2001 TD5 would have faired better. Probablt staged to appeal to the anti 4x4 lobby! Still think my LR rocks.

Funny how they used a disco that is almost identical to the original from 1989 - yet the Espace is a new one.Wonder what would have happened if they used a Disco 3 ?

Ive seen a Disco3 that hit a Fiesta at 30Mph, I would not have liked to have been the driver of the Disco !!!!!

It aint an 89 Disco!! Its a facelift so must be 94 or newer!! Hardly apples with apples as no airbag fire in the disco!!

Hi All,

Just thought I'd share it with you.

Revjames, I doubt a 2001 TD5 would fair that much better I've just put a deposit on a 2003 TD5 and am a little on the worries side now.!

Oh well who cares, it's a landy. :D

Its all comparisions , and anyway thats only one type of crash , I agree that Renualt have great safety features but crashes are not exact science ie no two are the same. Ive seen loads of crashes in my time (to do with my job ) and it really depends on the nature and casue of the crash.

IMO all we can do it treat the saftey issues as we think protects us best , personally I still live with the bigger style car is prob best in most situation with the exception of roll overs which sadly landrovers are common too and because the shell is not part of the chassis they seem to fair worse .

Advances in safety are always welcomed and things will only get better with all manufacturers trying constantly to upgrade safety.

That said ive own disco's and RR's for years and would not be put off buying one on the grounds that its not safe.

The point I was making is that the facelift Disco from 93 on is of the same structural design as the first 89 model - the differences are just cosmetic and as the SRS did not deploy it is even more like the older model.

89-98 basically the same machine headlights and minor mods only so way behind as far as technology goes compared with the Renault who (as posted above) do have a very good safety record. Disco 3 vs Newest Espace? still not sure who'd win. We just have to all drive safer and be aware of the risks we take!

renaults are probably the safest cars on the road. no arguements, look at their ncap ratings.

as for the disco..... yes, it is 80's technology in everything up to a TD5 so why not compare it against a mk1 espace (big wedge on wheels) but i would still much rather be in a 5 star car given the choice and knowing i was gonna crash!

had that been head on, i feel the renault would have come off worse than it did there but the disco would have suffered even more too.

also, if sitting in the very back and shunted from behind - i would proabably rather be in the disco than sat with my head inches from the glass and a collision like i would in an espace (mother used to have a mk2 espace and i always sat in the boot....... very un-nerving when you stop at lights etc.)

my younger brother used to be the one who had to sit in the very back part of Dads car (a Maestro I think) He always used to complain "why do I have to sit in the crumple zone?" That was in the days before child seats, rear seat belts etc.

How's about a rematch with a disco fitted with a winch bumper?

Out of principle and disapointment for thinking that disco's were outbloodycrumplezoned by an upturned 2wd bathtub, I will not be towing any stuck Espace's out of snow in future...(which happened a couple of weeks ago!) They are now in the 'do not help' catagory along with anything badged BMW..!:D

Bashing out that sort of damage with a hammer would 'add character' to any landrover, you couldn't say that about the Espace now could you ???

Win? Neither, everyone loses in a RTA, just some are 'more equal' than others.

Can't argue with the second sentance ;)

after watching it twice, am sure it was more a test between 80's technologeeee and today's technologeeeee rather than a test between a minibus and a disco.

anyway i crashed in a disco once, had a reet ****ter of a headache when the cleaner woke me up in the morning

You can always bring your disco up to spec by filling out the chassis with reinforced concrete for ballast, bolt railway sleepers around the shell for side impact trim, use RSJ's front to rear for a roll cage, mount rockets and chainsaws as anti-theft deterrents. The disco will easily take the weight and still look cool. If that don't keep 5* Ncaps at a distance, make it LHD. :D :D
