............is it normal for the engine to run at high revs and the air filter oil bath to chuck black dirty ****e out the top when you put redex in a series 3 petrol. fecking hope so cos that just what ours has done this morn:eek:

just to say that i have done this loads of times and it has never done this to the car i was working on.

Well, redex is supposed to clean yer engine a bit. Maybe theres nowhere else for the black ****e to go? As far as I know, it isn't normal.

engines running fine now, was running a bit fast yesterday morn but has calmed down now:confused: just seems very odd that the only time any crap has come through the filter was when the redex went in.
hubs wanted to put some in the car but i've told him to feck off till tomorrow, i got to drive it to bristol and back tonight and don't want it to die going up togg hill or something:rolleyes:

hi,LB.i think you might have just put too much redex in at once, take it for a good fast run, that will get rid of any crap still in there, put some in the fuel tank as well, but not too much.

if air is being sucked into the engine how would black crud travel against the flow of air into the air filter? Or am I missing something?

sounds like its been back firring which will send all the old carbon and oil deposits back through the inlet manifold the carburettor and finaly into your air filter. dont worry itll be fine.honest!!!!:D:D:D
Im a gaenochologist? not a very good one but Ill have a good look:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Redex is an oxidising agent.... like nitreose oxide, only not as powerful!
How did you mix the redex?
Instructions say to put a shot into the tank, depending on how much petrol you put in.
If you put it in before the petrol, splashing new petrol on top of it, usually mixes it pretty well, but if you squib it in after, then it can just sink to the bottom of the tank, and when you start the engine, pump sucks a really redex ritch mix into the carb.
Of course IF you squirted it in the air-filter..... even worse.
Now, put anything but petrol in your tank, and it will make the engien run lean; its going to drag through the same volume of liquid regardless of whether its fuel or addative.
Run lean, get knock, or back-firing.
But worse, as Redex an oxidising agent, and 'decokes' the engine by releasing oxygen during combustion, in the hope of turning carbon deposits into CO2 and seeing them chucked down the exhaust pipe......
But as much chance of that extra oxygen assisting combustion of fuel..... making engine run effectively even weaker!
Back-fire through oil-bath air-filter; would dislodge any soot or crud in the wire wool, or on the walls of the filter, and possibly shoot cruddy oil out the spout....
Anyway, stuff has never made much difference to anything I've ever driven; get more effect from cleaning the spark-plugs, points and setting the tappets and timing.

on a lot of motors there's a breather into the air box from the head.. is that the case on these? might want to check piston seals in that case as the redex may have partially decoked them (and maybe the coke was all that was forming a seal....)

redex went into tank after petrol, would have been best to do it first i guess then lol, it was popping and misfiring a fair bit after so hopefully thats all it was, won't use it again!!
got a new dizzy to put on next week so timing etc will get properly sorted and hopefully Pig will then be running..... well like a 30 yr old landy lol:rolleyes:
thanks for your help guys was thinking the worst:eek:
