When filtering old veg oil I use the 10 inch clear plastic filter housings with removable filters elements. I have an 80 micron filter which filters out the real big lumps then when the veg oils run through that a 10 and a 1 micron in series to really clean it. I had trouble finding a pump that was useable but after a bit of skip diving I found an old central heating pump which does a good job. I'm assuming this set up could filter any old oil? Which would be handy as I have about 20 ltrs of old engine oil settling on my shed windowsill waiting for a sunny morning to heat it up a bit.
 
I suppose if it pumps veg oil it'll pump dino oil.
Thought central heating pumps were centifuge type though?
Not sure if it would pump under pressure through several filters.
If it works though I've got a spare one which might be just the job for my set up.
I'll ley you get all mucky and do the experimenting.

I'm with you on that point ...

BUT, CH pumps are designed to run with the rotor immersed in the fluid, and they are designed to run bloody hot.

I am impressed that a CH pump makes much effect as an oil pump. Usually, oil pumps are meshing gears or diaphragms pumps.

If you are filtering to 1 micron you can be pretty sure that they didn't even do that when the oil was new!

It helps that the dirty oil starts from the top shelf in mi shed down a 1 inch diameter hose to the CH pump on the next shealf down. This ensures that the CH pump is always primed with oil, The 80 micron filter becomes blocked quite quickly and it will struggle but once the oil has been semi cleaned it pushes through the other filters fine. I was thinking of dropping the 1 micron filter as its a bit overkill. Its not a fast flow but its certainly better than gravity alone. I can filter about 20 ltrs of filthy oil in about an hour (and most of that time is getting it through the 80 micron filter). And yes, its number 1 in the top 5 of crap hobbies. Filtering old oil is hands down the most discusting and crappy thing to do. Sometimes I wonder why I bother...
 
It still lives!!!:) Got the fuel tank drain plug out let it all drain for about 1/2hour inluding jacking the N/S corner up, changed the filter put some good pump diesel in ran her up loads of white smolke still but after a while got better then down the road £20 lighter and a good hard run for abot 20miles and all i have now is a little black smoke not loads but so you can see it in the mirror, powers back but still not what is was but getting better. So must have been the home brew!

It looks like pump diesel but just do'nt smell right cannot work out what because all it was was oil and diesel when mixed.
 
You said you mixed 1 litre used filtered oil to 2 litres clean pump diesel which is about what I've been doing. Did you cut the used oil to thin it down and if so what did you use? I've been using petrol at between 5% to 10% as I dont want any trace of Kero or Parafin in my tank. I dont know what the problem is but my engine is a TD5 and I dont have too much experience with the Tdi. I must admit I'm stumped by this one.
 
I had some new oil in old cans from years ago. Some pint hydraulic oil cans and the like so I tipped about 2 litres of it in with about 3 gallons of fuel.
The truck went like **** and no smoke so it does work
Only problem I have is will the oil and derv seperate when the vehicle is stood overnight like the old two stroke motorbikes did. One had to shake the bike to mix the fuel before starting.

Mix some up in a glass jam jar and leave it to stand overnight.
If it don't separate in the jar then it won't in your tank.

Just mixed with diesel 2ltr to 1 ltr oil gave it a good shake then filter.
Now its out the engine runing better with just a small amount of white smoke on start but while driving has black. That looks to me more like unburnt fuel. Had another run out power is coming back so that still looks like a fuel mix ratio wrong.
Anyone know how to clean injectors??
Once its better and i am happy am going to have another go.

Just filter it well, and lob it in the tank!

Adjust the thickness by adding in more or less of the recovered oil into the diesel.
