If you want a lamp that works .....

Just buy a Coleman Northstar ....END of !!!!!

Runs on peccy so about the cheapest to run AND if you buy the Northstar it's got push button ignition AND No fannying about preheating it with meths .

Yep they are more expensive BUT they do last (ive had mine for about 10 years now along with 2 burner and a 3 burner petrol cookers )

After researching the coleman northstar- the petrolmax is brighter and from the fishing forums the Coleman is susceptible to ignitor failure and corrosion/regular spares with lots of use.
Rapid start no meths needed and less of a fire risk on paraffin.

Petromax design is 100 years old

Is it worth buying an old tilley/aladdin/vapourex(?) lamp and refurbishing it? They all run on paraffin and all the parts seem to be still available.

VAPALUX M320 LAMP can be picked up cheaply

id thought of getting petrol coleman as have cooker version ,is that good or bad idea ,petrol been much more widly available ?

They do a nice double burner in a case that runs on petrol.

The concern I had was in the event of a failure that you had a pressurized flammable liquid, where the paraffin would go out without pressure and heat.

Petrol will be exciting.

The lamp I'm getting has a cooking attachment available, but I may make my own as it is considerably cheaper than £33

Maybe you would be better off with a sandwich ...

Nice and safe those sandwiches ...careful on the clingfilm though it can be a bit sharp .

Seriously though ....Why do folks worry about a tank of pressurised petrol yet dont fuss about 7KG of pressurised butane/propane ????

Sure they are both dangerous if you are stupid with them,BUT so is driving your landy if you are a tit :D:D

a car go up on unleaded in less than a minute, couldn't be put out and had to have foam pumped in tank to stop it reigniting -so I have a healthy respect for petrol.

Always used a Tilley, had 1 was over 30 year old, regular maintanance is the key, same as anything you want to keep working.

Used a Coleman once, wasn't overkeen, but like anything you get used to 'em.

Why not use a head lamp ,I got one in tk-max for a fiver last week.
Something like this

Easier to carry to and from the beach/rocks .For the money you intend forking out for the lantern you'd get a good petzel .

Hope your missis is in good health .

the fuel ,very middle class ,though i must admit coleman stove i have is useful as gives out alot of heat and fuel is easily available ,it has begun to rust with been in salty atmoshere ,but £50 is more my price range, never thought of your concern of pressurised petrol

The colemans are established brand, now I know your understand buying a tool to last a lifetime.

I don't rubbish coleman as it is a popular brand, but I do feel it is a more a camping brand.

NATO use the lamp I have bought-so I hope it will last with 100 years heritage

yes i think your right ,it is camping quality 10 years perhaps ,dont even think about buying £36 3/8 drive socket or £400 for battery gun but do baulk abit at toys however necessary,

Yes I currently take a gas cooker and a generator for events we do, the hope is a reduction in kit required and fuel costs at £6 a night for generator for lighting and butane for cooking.
V
pint of paraffin

we normally do at least 30 days a year or so and at least 25% of the time no power or light

i shall look into paraffin ,never thought of it ,do quite like the idea of something that will last ,as every other thing nowadays is built **** ,presumably lanterns give off a fair amount of heat ?
