Check/adjust annually, there is a techy procedure involving torque wrenches etc, I just adjust them up until wheel starts to lock, then back off 8 clicks.
I fitted new genuine handbrake shoes 7 years ago, and recently replaced rear discs and pads, the shoes were good enough to go again.
As you have just bought the car I would suggest taking them down, having a look see, grease where the shoes touch the back plate, and chuck them back on, recheck in another year or two.
I think as they cannot be seen they are ignored until they either make a noise or the actuator buggers up as they have been ignoring the screech for ages.
