I have been reading this thread with a degree of caution. I have run series Land Rovers for over 35 years, am now an old fart and still can not see the need for power assistance.
The secret it to set up and maintain the steering correctly and keep away from the Tonka Toy tyre image. I run 205s and have never got stuck (OK so I spent 30 years building and driving trials cars which helps with throttle control)
Remember that all but the most expensive/luxury cars up until the 70s did not have power steering, we all learnt to turn the wheel when the vehicle was moving.

I agree completely - I too am an old fart who has only relatively recently owned stuff with power steering, but running 235's on a 109. I would have preferred 7.50's but I have what I have.
Two years ago I sustained a shoulder rotator cuff injury from which I have not fully recovered, and do not expect to. This drives my interest in this new-fangled electric servo technique - not because I want to but because I have to!
My Landy is a working vehicle - it's a mobile beekeeping shed - and the form must fit the function.

I have repeatedly stated here that the degree of assistance at a particular speed is the principal factor - moderation is the key - I have no wish to encourage the Tonka-toy brigade!
 
To be fair the only steering relay shafts ive heard of shearing are pattern ones (ie britpart/ allmakes/ bearmach) which apparantly seem to be made from Dairylea

Which is why i got my one piece shaft skimmed down in work to accept the removable seal lands instead of risking a substandard shaft
 
A couple of years ago was at a 4x4 show and talked to a guy who was selling power steering units that were from Shorland armoured cars,they were a bolt on job on a 109 he said.Worth a hunt?

Nowadays there's a significant risk of being unable to move my shoulder, or leg, or neck, or any other appendage when I wake in the morning.....

I've always rather like pussies.
