Had a go with the two obvious places round here and the VW garage and had no luck. But did have a proper result. Found a little back street garage, run by a very nice german bloke, that specialises in Brit cars. Pulled in and had a word; at the first mention of GL4/5 he nods sagely and says: Ya GL5 is bad for the bearings in the transmission, which axles have you got fitted? I tell him Rover ones and he nods again telling me that GL5 is OK in them. All the time I'm looking round the yard and it's full of Brit cars MGs and Triumphs mostly but a belter of a mini (real one) and a feck of Panther (don't think it's Brit) and he's got a TR6 up on the lift changing the diff.
Well after 20 mins I've booked it in to have both the dissie and clutch master cylinder renewed (I've got the new ones already), have the G/Box and T/Box oil renewed, renew the gaskets above and below the carb (slight leak), renew the vacum advance tube and give it it good looking over/tune. I'll post the all up price when complete but it's looking dammed good.
Anyway what about ENV and Salisbury axles? Are those diffs safe or do they need GL4 too? My local guy seems to think (he wanted to check first before commiting himself) that the Salisbury one at least may prefer GL5. Any thoughts anyone?
