thanks for all the replies, I feel much more in the know now! To remove the middle section of pipe, is it just bolted or is it welded?

Fit a Boost pin Mate. The whistle kicks in whenever you put reasonable acceleration on and it sounds great.
Also decat the exhaust and do a straight through system.
Timber Trail do the Boost pin it's easy as anything to fit and gives not only your required whistle but more oomph. Best mod I've done.
Cheers I'll look them up, this might sound a bit dumb but what exactly is it and where does it go? and is it safe? I don't want to end up wrecking a perfectly good 300tdi haha :/

Boost pin and straight through exhaust plus new turbo pipes , the whistle is very noticeable, the acceleration between 40 and 70 in top is a different vehicle and the exhaust note is nice but not intrusive. . Also did the cam belt as an insurance.

Lots of smoke if you boot it but nothing on a steady throttle.

ive done some research and it looks like having no muffler is technically illegal..can anyone confirm? turns out my landy only has the big one in the middle (not sure if this is standard or what) so i'd have to fit one at the end if i did get a straight through pipe

It isnt. Mines been straight thru for 3 years, passed every MOT at 3 different stations and no garage has even mentioned it.

Hah, good question. I was a total novice when I fitted mine and now I'm a lightly experienced novice. The Boost pin goes into the fuel pump. Take the original one out, put the new one in. There's a Youtube tutorial by Timber Trail showing you exactly how to do it. Took me 20 mins, skilled bloke about 1!!!!
Totally safe too. One thing I have learned is that a 300tdi was heavily restricted by LR. That gives it it's longevity but helping it to breath by blanking the EGR and de catting it and helping it drink lots of yummy diesel really lets it spread it's wings!
