Right,
This might sound really stupid, but I like the whistling sound turbos make. Like the really loud one on those american 2/half ton trucks.

Is there any way to (safely) make a 300tdi whistle more? I don't imagine there is, but on the off-chance...

Cheers

Total straight thru exhaust will help, turn the boost up to the safest highest point on a 300tdi.

I love the noise too!

Thanks bankz, don't really think i've got the budget for a new exhaust at the moment though. And everyone else - yeah I thought it was a stupid question, but you don't ask if you don't get do you?

Exhausts are pretty cheap, new downpipe and a straight thru should only be around £80 - £100.

Thought paddocks or the like we're doing a 'sports' exhaust somewhat cheaper?

Might well be wrong though o_O

Rich.

cheers I'll have a look at Paddock's, just seen a video on youtube of a straight-thru exhaust and it sounded nicely meaty

May well be cheaper off ebay but shop around.

Downpipe is 3 bolts round the turbo I think, at least it is on a TD5, these may well be seized due to the heat so plenty of plus gas! Then two bolts hold the downpipe to the mid section and two bolts hold the mid section to the rear section. May differ for you as its a 300tdi but should be generally the same...

One thing is to fit the new downpipe you have to remove the central crossmember, can be easy can be a pain depending rust etc...

Overall generally a pretty simple job.

Ok cheers for the advice :)

Am I right in saying that the 'straight-through' pipe replaces the straight part of the exhaust containing the muffler and simply doesn't have a muffler on it, so it's a bit noisier?

Yeah, straight thru pipe replaces the mid box silencer/muffler. It'll make your landy louder and bellow a little inside but it doesnt take long to used to. Plus with an unrestricted exhaust you should notice reduced turbo lag and a very slight increase in mpg.

Plus it will sound awesome, old friend of mine had a 300tdi full straight thru with a largeish tail pipe sounded brilliant

right thanks for the advice then, sounds good! I don't want it to be obnoxiously loud or anything but a bit more grunt would be appreciated

I thought of 'fast and furious' when I saw this post, then I got to thinking of what a crap actor vin diesel is and then I remembered that his latest film 'the last witch hunter' is also crap.

Fit a Boost pin Mate. The whistle kicks in whenever you put reasonable acceleration on and it sounds great.
Also decat the exhaust and do a straight through system.
Timber Trail do the Boost pin it's easy as anything to fit and gives not only your required whistle but more oomph. Best mod I've done.
