why does my disco still keep running when ignition is off its a 200 series tdi. sorry to make myself clearer the onlyway to stop this car is to stall it , all other electric turn off but engine just keeps on running

Do this damned soon as stalling the engine is very sore on your clutch.

Easy DIY job, but take care with some stopper solenoids as the inner plunger may be a loose part and drop out when you isn't paying attention.

Then it won't stop the engine and you will get cross.

be very careful once a diesel start running off it's own oil it can simply suck all the oil out of the sump and self destruct.

YUP.

You might have trouble even seeing the car for all the smoke, and then the engine will run completely out of control, over-rev, and disintegrate at about 8,000 rpm.

Best not to be too close when this happens or you may get hit by a con-rod.

It's just that I didn't see where the original poster said that his car was smoking,
that's all!
I think he just said the engine wouldn't stop

Just to muddy the waters even more,I think the pump is breaking up inside and steel particles are attracted to the plunger of the solenoid. They get stuck up the side of it.The magnetic pull is strong enough to open the plunger to let it run,but the spring is not strong enough to push it shut and stop it.
Its usually caused by water in the diesel - it doesnt take much, and its not uncommon.
Take the solenoid out and take out the plunger - any swarf and its time for a pump rebuild.
