has anyone got any idea why at around 2000 revs and above the engine has developed a loud whistle not a loose belt squeel a whistle.:confused:
 
i'll try, but there's no loss in power and the noise is less once you get up to speed. it's at it's loudest under hard excelleration.
 
That sounds like it then...

You've not suddenly started driving without the radio on have you?
 
Same as bmp42, also check EGR piping (the corrugated metallic piping) if you haven't blanked it off.
 
had a quick look today and i must admit the noise seem's to come from the aircon compresser which is very close to the manifold so it's one or the other, anyway it's going in to get sorted on friday.
 
Mines doing exactly the same thing. Changed the belt,tensioner and idler and its still doing it. Didn't think of the exhaust gasket. Any where in particular you'd expect it to go?

Thats it. Got the heat shield off the turbo (eventually, lost my temper with it. Might need a new one now) Last manifold stud has sheared off and its blowing round the rear port.
One bit of good news, Its just about the only one you can get at with a drill without removing the turbo.
Thats next Sunday accounted for then.
 
centrafugal oil seperators can some times whistle as they spin ,we had one that you could hear slowing down after turning engine off
 
I had the same prob with my manifold in the same place. The quick fix you are suggesting won't work for long. Alloy head, cast manifold = differant cooling times. There is a thread somewhere (on this site I think) which i followed and have not had a problem since. Get the manifold off, check that the mating surface is true, mine was destorted so that was machined. Next get the angle grinder out and cut away the webs to reduce the surface area, stick a new manifold gasket or two on bolt it together and you'll never have the prob again (maybe).:)
 
I'm not really doing a quick fix. Its just I can use the manifold as a drilling guide to start drilling out the broken stud. Biggest problem is getting the drill centred befor I can clear & tap out the thread. Then I can get the manifold off and replace the gasket.
Being a born pessimist, I ordered 4 replacement studs and nuts just in case.
Only just got the car so no idea how long its been like this but its going to be so nice not to listen to that screech.
