Hello fellas. About 10 days ago the engine warning light came on, the one that handbook says that you can continue driving the car etc without problems, after a day it went off, came back on 2 days later for 3 hours, then again 3 days ago for an hour and since then nothing!! I've noiced that the car is running a bit rough, when I pull away traffic lights theres a slight hestitation and when you rev it slightly it also seem a bit rough, I took it a "bosch" service centre this morning, they told me that nothing was showing up on the computer, and without the light on probably wouldnt show the fault anyway, he charged me 50 quid and emptied a tin of injector cleaner in the tank and said that would probably solve the problem lol. He said if the light came on again bring it straight back and they'd take another look.......

How sad - what a rip off - £50 to find nothing!!

My local LandRover stealer wanted £80 - no chance.

Buy yourself an OBD scanner / reader and find the codes yourself next time. :)

I have one permanently wired in and scan once a week. :D

You can easily find the codes on here or elsewhere - all the common ones usually turn out to be a cheap or easy fix.

You can also turn the light off yourself after you've fixed it.

I'm told that the light will go off itself anyway if the ECU doesn't find the problem again for three starts / journeys. That's hopefully what has happened in your case.

Thanks mate. Where can I buy an OBD scanner? I've seen some on E-Bay but I'm not sure which one to buy. Cheers. Ian

Hi Ian ,
you do not say what engine your freeloader is running
If its petrol I would look at a dodgy coil pack /plug fault
if its a oil burner I don't have a clue:):)

If your car is earlier than 2004/5 and it's diesel then it will not be OBD2 compliant which means that that the cheaper DIY scanners will not work as they are all OBD2 reader/scanners.

Ian,

Did you solve this problem? My engine light on my 99 XEDi came on yesterday, then stayed off this morning.. Stoppped at a garage to top up with diesel, then when i started it the engine light was back on!

Turned out to be the battery in the end!! so the bastard that charged me 50 quid for a tin of injector cleaner was taking the ****... Its a 2006 so I've bought a decent quality scanner, hopefully next time I can check any faults myself
