If it is blown head gaskets,it will either the front 2 cylinders or the back 2 cylinders, these are the only cylinders that are near water jackets, take the plugs out and look for a different colour on 1 or 2 of them, might point to a liner problem if it's on the Middle cylinders,

Someone recommended steal seal (£30, money back if it didn't work)

So off i trot to GSF and buy a bottle. I asked the chap behind the counter what it was like. "Loads of traders but it" says he "Not had one comeback and complain".

That's comforting to know ! :(:mad::eek::Cry:

I'm sure products like this are very well liked by the trade.

Most traders will have palmed off bodged motors before this develops into a problem, leaving the buyer to deal with it once the short term warranty has expired.

here are the compression test results
#1 175
#2 155
#3 170
#4 150

Plug #1-4 were black with soot ..plugs in the other head seemed ok..all cleaned replaced and engine runs but not smoothly..so to the diagnosis..any suggestions guys?

Teaspoon of oil into no2 through the spark plug hole and try again, do the same to no4....

If the readings increase, rings could be worn, if no increase, badly seating valves due to carbon buildup or the gasket is split!

Also do a sniff test on the coolant.

Wonderweld or Steel Seal are well worth a go if you feel it is the head gasket ! Its rubbish that they don't work they do in the right circumstances, I have a mate with a 4.6 who used a double strength one from Halfords he had the head gasket gone between a pot and a water jacket it sealed it in an hour and he has since done 20k miles and still holding ! Just don't be tempted by the ceramic sealants as they do cause extra work if you then have to tear down ! GOOD LUCK AND IF YOU NEED A GOOD INDEPENDENT LAND ROVER SPECIALIST GO TO BOB AT DAS LAND ROVER HORLEY

Thanks for all who've contributed, I borrowed the comp tester so wont be able to do the oil in the plug hole to check the rings, its suggested that I may have dropped liners on two pots so I may be looking at an engine swap out! Best quote for which is £500!!!** is this about the going rate guys??

£500 seems reasonable to swap engines.
I would confirm the liners have slipped before considering swapping the engine. May be worth whipping the heads off first.
Depends on what your prepared to spend & how long you intend to keep it but swapping for another standard 4.6 may give the same liner slip issues in time.
Top hat block is the best way forward. Picking mine up tomorrow.
