Having refirbished my engine with new cam and crank bearings, new seals and a whole host of other parts, it runs, set timing up twice now, the first time i after breaking it in, it got lumpy and starting tapping after 1500 revs plus,

so started from scratch again, set crank to TDC, cam to the markings, and fuel pump to 9.5mm locating hole, cam belt on, 2 turns everything lines up, took rocker cover off, checked valve spacings, most spacings were too big, so i adjusted them to recommended settings,

got it all back together, started engine, revved it to 3k rpm, no ticking and sounded lovely, nice and smooth, let it idle for a few mins and revved it again, it was then lumpy, flat in places and my ticking is back,

its gotta be the timing slipping right?

ok so stripped it down again!

cam was a tooth out, set it up and in reading the rave manual to the letter, i realized the error of my ways, i was tightening up the idler before tensioning the belt, in doing so that would gave me too much slack before it hit torque, so effectively the belt was too loose,

so i have reset the timing, tightened up the tensioner first then the idler, 2 turns all ok, started engine, and reved it up, all ok, got it all back together and so far so good, still got a slight tapping, but i can live with it

Does your the FIP timing pin still slide in when the crank is set to TDC? If it does then your timing hasn't slipped, its an easy check and only needs the FIP cover removing (3 bolts). If it has slipped are you sure you are torqueing the 3 pump pulley bolts correctly?

Tapping could be lift pump.
