2006 TD5 Defender 90. Had an issue with starting and engine not pulling above 40mph. Had fuel pump replaced along with new filter. Now starting is ok and filter primes however after only 1 1/2 - 2 miles engine cuts out. Then will not start for a while. It seems that the pump is priming but then when running is stopping so once initial fuel used it dies of starvation.
Anyone had this and found a solution or any ideas on where to look.

In my case, intermittent cutting out was caused by oil in the injector loom, whereas for most people it causes poor running rather than no running at all. Worth a look though. Another thing that has caused me problems was a poorly seated sealing washer on the inner part of the fuel filter. There's a big outer rubber washer round the perimeter and a small one in the middle. The middle one had got all rucked up somehow. That was associated with cutting out too.

It's quite normal for the pump to switch itself off once the fuel is up to pressure. So it doesn't have to run continually. Once the TD5 engine has started, it will even run with the pump unplugged (albeit more slowly) so that's unlikely to be the major part of the problem.
 
I was recommended Ian Barclay Motors in Birkenhead as a very good place to have this sorted. They have done, it was the Injector sealing washers, they said they were the worst they had ever seen. Cost £260 including an MOT, I would highly recommend them for anyone in Merseyside area. Only problem I had was getting the defender there as it was immobile, used www.anyvan.co.uk, cost £80 to transport it over.
The previous garage I had used Maghull 4x4 changed fuel pump, airflow meter and then when that didn't work were at a loss of what to do and it would seem that may have been unnecessary. They fitted an genuine land rover fuel pump and the total bill was £1300 !
