Hi folks,

Thanks for your help with another thread I am running about my starter motor.

Now I've got the beast running its a little lumpy. Its not a backfire I think or anything like that, it just 'phuts' a couple of times a second or so and you can feel it in the vibrations.

Which I guess is to be expected as it sat in a field for 6 months. However before it sat in the field it ran like a dream, smooth and quiet. And I want to get it back to that.

So is there like a '101' on how to setup the engine properly and in what sequence to do it? I'm a full novice but I can follow guidance. I've replaced starter motor, battery, starter solenoid, petrol, oil, HT and spark plugs but points, timing, distributer, carb setup capacitor and all that stuff I don't really know where to begin.

Is there a sensible order of things, and what do I need to check / set in a recommissioning???

Guidance appreciated!

Setup the ignition - you'll probably need to clean or replace the points (use really fine wet and dry or a proper points file, make sure the surfaces are flat and parallel) Change the condensor and, if they look burnt, the rotor arm and cap. Change the leads, too if they look a bit old. Set the gap and check the timing is about right and it should run OK. If it doesn't you will need to look at the fuel system. Change the fuel for fresh, check the filters and then strip and clean the carb. Get a gasket set (or overhaul kit if it's not been refurbed for a while) for the carb before stripping!
