If there is a gouge out the block then it needed force, a fair bit of force to damage it. You say it didn't turn over when you went to start it so that sounds to me like the con rod broke while the engine was running and thats when the gouging took place, the engine was able to overcome the forces but not the starter. I would have expected the engine to run rough and noisey but stranger things have happened, maybe it was and you didn't notice if it wasn't too bad.
 
Thats a bummer,still it did not go when on the road,had it done so you would probabley found the rod sticking out the side of the block. All best with the rebuild.
 
hit the starter with a hammer then rock back and forward then try the ratchet then just bump it or even take the rocker then the head off but before you do these try replacing the earth strap or atleast take it off sand the strap and the chassis earth point then go for it but remember to prime then spray the sanded down bit on the chassis as if we want to hear of another rotten rotter good luck budd!!

You are right that the engine must have been travelling a significant speed, because of the gouge in the crankcase. Looks like it might be a new engine job, since the gouge eats into the cylinder a little and also there are metal particles in the bearings (or something like that, haven't had a look myself.) This leads me to think that the engine must have been spinning a decent amount of time for the particles to make their way into the bearings, though I am certainly no mechanic, as you have probably already gathered.
 
Also, I'm thinking that the engine must have previously been thrashed, since the conrod was replaced before I bought it (as I said, with some low grade item). I am the sort of person who won't buy a car if it has chavish seat covers, simply because I think this could indicate that the car had been thrashed; so this is slightly worrying for me.
