Hi all,I know this is my first post and I would have hoped it would have been about my Defender 90 and how happy i am with it.
I've had it 10 days and bought it from a dealer in Derby off the internet,i'm in kent so took a chance after a bit of reaserce and a good chat to the dealer.
A couple of days ago as I stopped and went to reverse, without warning the engine just started to rev as if i was standing on the throttle,,it has done this 3 times now.and a load of smoke came from under the bonnet.
I phoned the dealer who said it could be fuel stavartion and the engine is drawing fuel from the return pipe.He also said it could be the rocker cover breather??
I changed fuel filter and it has done it again.A quick search and it seems like it might be the turbo.
i'm trying to get it looked at tomorrow to get a proper diagnosis but I can really just throw it back at the dealer as it's a 400 mile round trip!
Sorry that my 1st post is for help but if you have any ideas I'd be happy, cheers

As you're new here I'll do it for ya, just this once ;)

O.k we checked out the turbo and it's not that.when i took it for some work to be done the fuel tank was leaking,so a new jubile clip and a new filler cap fitted, and that's when the problem started.the other day I decided to put some fuel plus injector cleaner in to see if that would help as some people were saying it could be the injector pump, when I un did the fuel cap the tank was pressurized,so I htought faulty new cap not venting properly.I blagged a knackered fuel cap which didn't seal well,so I knew it would vent ond took it up the road,in high reves in 2nd it started ****ing fuel past the cap,any thoughts about the tank pressure ? is this normal?

injection pump ,there is a return to tank from pump ,there also boost feed from turbo to injection pump

ok latest update, took it to local garage and they discovered the the seller have accidently connected up the lift pump inlet and return pipes around the wrong way, this has stopped the fuel tank being pressurized and although the engine in running much better it has still run the rev's up slightly a couple of times but no where near as high or for as long,do you think there is still a different cause? Both garages that hae inspected the defender say the turbo is fine, although one said it sounded like it was drawing oil as the rev's have a loud clattering sound,it doesn't sound like clean reving.Any further thoughts please?

Just thought I'd tell you what we found.after phoneing some of diesel centers all 3 of them said if there was fluid in the tube between the turbo and the injector pump then the diaphram was split and that would draw fuel up it and feed the turbo, and that was checked, you can change the diaphram in situ (it's £5) and fingers crossed i drove around in it all day today and it hasn't faulted

I've been following this correspondence very carefully as my problem seems to be identical, so I'm really happy if you've managed to sort it out in a rather simple way. In order to do the same with my car, my problem is that I'm not very "technical" and wouldn't know how to explain to a mechanic what a diaphram is (not to mention that english is not my first language). Therefore, I would really appreciate, if possible, a photo of a problematic part, so that I could easily identify it on my defender, and then replace. Thank you very much indeed.

I'm not a teck either, but the injector pump is down the L/H side of engine. From the turbo unit is a tube that feeds down to the injector pump.behind that cover on the pump is the diaphram, unfortunatly it is tucked up between the pump and engine so a bit aukward to access, the cover is held on by 2 or 3 bolts,i didn't do it myself, but was shown a pump that was off an engine, there is a washer and spring under diaphram so i think U'd need to be carfull they don't drop off.
An easy way to check the diaphram is split is to take the tube off from the turbo end,if it is wet/has fuel in it then the diaphram is split, and that what causes the problem as it draws fuel upto the turbo and feeds the engine causing the over reving. That tube should be dry as it's function is when the turbo spins up it sucks the diaphram open to allow more fuel to be feed in.hope that helps and i have described it correctly
i can't take a picture as I'm at london hospital with my son.

Thanks mate, I've already dismantled it - the diaphragm was virtually torn apart! Now searching for a new one - not such an easy task in my country - not so many defenders here, especially not with 19J.

This is really kind of you, thank you so much. I'm still trying to find one locally, but if this fails, I hope to stay in touch and see what we can do. Thank you again.

Have you checked the airfilter housing for oil build up?

Dissconnect the pcv to see if it makes a difference?

Sounds like your motor is running on oil?
