Hey guys, just had the bad news from garage that following an oil pump failure, my engine contains lots of metal bits, but not where they should be !

They don't want to take responsibility for sourcing a recondition engine, but are happy to fit etc. For £1200

So my question then - Does anyone here supply them, or can you recommend a supplier as I don't really fancy risking ebay or similar, only to find I'v bought a heavy pile of poo !!

It's a 2002 L322 with a 4.4 V8

Thanks !

Pete (deeply depressed and about to be very poor) :(

I have no idea....

I feel very sorry for you.

I bought mine with a replacement engine supplied and fitted by a LR dealer (verified with said dealer) and the bill was in excess of £6k according to the receipt.

The M62TU44 unit was used in a lot of vehicles, but the LR varient has a different sump where it mounts the front diff and I think a revised Oil Pick up for use at the odd angle LR wanted to use it at!

If you can get hold of an engine from the X5, E38, E39 then you could in theory bolt on the LR bits to the BMW block...

I don't know anyone who sells recon/new LR based engines...but a troll round the BMW forums could tell you where to find the BMW varient!

Doesn't the LR motor have simpler valve timing setup compare to a lot of the Beemer units too?

Hi pwes. I can't help with the new engine but what kind of mileage had you done before the oil pump failed?

During the M62's life it was available in different varients...

M62BXX without VANOS and M62TUBXX with VANOS

The VANOS on the M62 Engine was Single only and adjusts the Intake Cam angle

Double VANOS was available on the M62's successor, the N62 which was fitted to BMW vehicles from 2002...

Although the L322 was 2002 onwards, it was given the slightly older M62TUB44 engine with Single VANOS and the N62 remained reserved for BMW cars.

The DME (Digital Motor Electronics) on the LR engine may have different VANOS maps to suit the lower end torque maps LR wanted from the M62....but I am sure if you mate a BMW M62TUB44 to the LR bespoke parts and the LR DME unit...the transplant should work...as the VANOS angles are controlled via the LR DME and not the BMW DME.

Also as and EDIT to my first post: the 2003-2006 X5 had the N62 Double Vanos engine...so if you get an X5 engine get the earlier one!

Oh and PS: Beemer is the BMW Bikes and Bimmer are their cars :D:D:D:D:D
