Get rid asap and use the money you would have spent trying to keep it on the road for another year. to buy a proper 4x4.

If its scrap, then whip the head off and have a look before replacing the whole engine.

You can get lots from breakers - personally I would buy an accident damaged (rear end shunt) rover 200/400 /freelander with a 1.8 engine and swap over. You might even find some vehilcles that still start allowing you to check the engine out beforehand.

Simpson Salvage :: York :: usually have a few in stock.

Have you checked the plugs for oil fouling, could be anything from worn valve stem oil seals, to worn piston ring, all can be replaced.

If you dont have bearing wear on the big end bearings then the crank might be sound, as G13 said it could just be the head assemblage.valve stem seals, worn valve stems???

If the top end of the drivetrain if fine, hydraulic tappets still quiet etc, then your engine could be salvagable
