Hi I have a l322 3lt diesel engine and I need to remove it to fit a new one I have done tons of Fords Subaru evo and so on but not a range rover so I was wondering can I lift it out or do I need to drop it out as I would like to lift it out but just need some advice thanks justin

Should lift out...dropping it will require dropping the subframe also.

Best to lift it out..

Removing the rad and oil coolers can also help, it did on the M62 atleast..

I believe the M57 is longer, so that might be a necessity

Never done it, but I'm sure that the RAD and oil coolers need to come out, even on the P38 with the M51, getting the engine out with the RAD in place would be likely to result in a new RAD being needed.

Yes thinking about it..

You're right.. :D

Thanks so pull the front end off and disconnect the box and the engine and like 1000 wire connections and good to go was thing I would have to get the box out with it at 1 pont but thank good I dont need to

Have a look you may well find its one big multi plug for the engine, unplug that and leave it all on the engine.

Hi ok just a quick update I have spent 15 hours stripping the front off
Taking the hubs off
And completely disconnect the engine
And I will say it's a long job so tomorrow out she comes and start changing parts over and then drop the new one in will keep you lot up to date and thanks for the help so far

Up date never try to lift a l322 3lt bmw diesel engine out no point you have to take every thing off and still drop the cradle just to get it out spent 4 hours trying to get it out and had to give up as I was getting f___king stressed so will get back on it tomorrow

Know the feeling. A five minute job just turned into a weekender for me. Time to have a break when frustration sets in.

^^^ when I get naffed, grrr tells me go have a cup of tea, bit of telly, go back with fresh perspective and renewed enthusiasm :)

If it's anything like the BMW x3, you may need to drop the subframe to allow it to pass over the steering rack.
Dropping the frame also gives you no end of access for the exhaust and turbo. I don't envy your task right now but good luck:D
