suggests it was seizing and getting mighty hot before piston and liner disintegrated.

It got hot enough for the wrist pin to slip sideways and drag on the cylinder wall before the piston melted completely. The grove is clearly visible. Looks like it's been driven without coolant until it would drive no more.

I just bought a 2004 SE with a broken K-series engine. I drained three liters of water from the crankcase. The crankshaft bearings are probably ruined.

Is it possible to take the engine out leaving the gearbox in place?

The answer is "Yes":

With both manifolds and the coolant rail removed it is fairly easy to fit the engine from below:

Any time, DD3 :) Your garage or mine? If yours, you'll have to pay my ferry ticket :welcome2:

Bugger, didn't spot that you were in Norway. Guess I'll be under the bleddy thing again. I've been re fitting the prop since October:D:D

It's good you can get the engine out with the IRD still bolted to the box. There was no way I could have done that with the V6:(
But looks like you're almost done ;)
