I just bought a 2004 SE with a broken K-series engine. I drained three liters of water from the crankcase. The crankshaft bearings are probably ruined.
Is it possible to take the engine out leaving the gearbox in place?
The engine has seized so regardless what it is it has to come out. I think V6 is shorter so it has probably more room to move over to the right?

freelaner, i didn,t read the link as my k series disappeared last year, so i was relying on grey matter
The V6 is around 3" shorter than the 4 pot iirc. The V6 is wider than the gap between the slam panel and bulkhead so has to come out @ a 45° angle.
This is what you see once the engine is out.
A 1.8 doesn't look that much different with the engine in!!!
The engine has to come out, that's for sure...:
