It helped that I mis-diagnosed the idler pulley first, which is close by.At least you know what it is

Thats a brilliant idea matey.I recommend you use the hose pipe trick to locate the blow kermit - will save you removing things "for inspection". I had this on my 4L Defender and only had to do the gaskets on the downpipes, not even exhaust manifold
