Hi, I wonder if any body can help? I have just stripped and reconned my 1977 diesel swb series 3. It had broken the big and little ends and I have replaced ALL the parts and checked each bore.
I have then taken it out ensuring that I dont over rev and keeping it at a safe 30-35mph. Having set off I went through the gears and started climbing a gentle hill in fourth doing about 30. It then lost power and cut out. I managed to restart and drove back home not coming out of third.
Im at a loss what has gone wrong as all the previous damage has been completely replaced and made good.
Any advise please!

When it re-started was it sounding ok...what's it like now????

Nick.

When I restarted it sounded fine! When I drove it back I was being really careful so I dont know what its like on high revs. It could be oil pressure but it has always smoked a bit.

its not going to be oil pressure unless its seizing up ,look at fuel system timing ,you dont need to run it in unless youve done bores and then it would want work and no idling

Maybe just an air pocket in the fuel sys thats worked its way out....I would just run it,

If it was making noises I would worry....just watch the oil press and engine temp.

Personally I dont think its oil pressure. Ive had problems with air in the fuel system in an old landy and it used to kangaroo jump on accelerating, so I dont think its that. Somebody has suggested the tappets but I hope to god its not as I dont fancy stripping the engine again.
Whats doing my head in is when the engine was knackered it was doing 50+ on the M1

You dont have to strip the engine to do tappets, just take the rocker cover off

Any oil in water or water in oil what manufacture was the head gasket.
With engine running try cracking off each injector in turn to see if they are all working do not overtighten the connections or they will fail.

Good call from Blackburn re cracking injectors. I still remove injectors and re torque after warm up even with composite gaskets, these engines can have gasket failure around push rod area. Let us know how you get on.
