just had my clutch done,guy who done it is brilliant,only charged £150,said this was the easiest way,now i put it in as i dont have the time to do a clutch myself
but out of interest on a 300 tdi defender is the gearbox a bastard to remove?

Not particularly, but the majority will choose to take the engine out over the box. I personally find it quicker and less fiddly. Particularly if you don't have access to a ramp.
 
about the same imo. certainly not unusual to do it that way. it's more of the case of the engine being pretty easy to take out and put in
 
I have always removed the engine even though i keep promising myself not to do it again. Friends of mine move the gearbox back and swear blindly that the job is done in just 3 hours.

read on here about people using long threaded bar and shifting it back a bit. not tried it though.
 
Personally I removed the gearbox when I replaced my 300TDi clutch & crankshaft oil-seal.

Seatbox & floor out, props & exhaust off, undo everything and lower to the floor (no hoist or jack used). Refitting the gearbox needed more accuracy (difficult as together the gearbox & transfer-box are very heavy and have an unusual centre of balance) so I separated them and lifted into place individually.

Not the easiest way perhaps but if you don't have access to a hoist then it is achievable single-handed using normal hand tools.
