TD5 is touching being 20 years old now... 5w40 or even 10w40 is perfect for England... Scotland and the Shetland Islands etc may benifit from a 5w grade
 
I have seen this kind of discussion many times, and commented before, turbochargers push lubricants to the limit, with high temperatures, and rotation speeds, synthetic oil is one of those luxuries that is well worth investing in. There will always be people who have run them on mineral oil and done fine for many years but its one area I don't cut back on, and many fully synth oils are quite cheap these days I use Halfords oil made by Comma, and change it regularly.
I can remember cars my dad ran that were absolutely clapped out at 60 to 80 K miles and had probably been de coked during that time, you hear of TD5 engines with 300 K on them still working, I think modern oils are part of that success story.


I could be wrong here but Im sure I recall Comma selling their oil blending side and just keeping the blow moulding plant?
 
I'm not sure who owns them now sometimes it's a case of companies that own companies owned by companies werent Exon involved?I Found out that they made the oil for Halfords when I looked at the health and safety certificate for the product on their web site.

Yes. So many takeovers and mergers it is hard to follow who makes what. And most British and American household names make their product elsewhere to avoid environmental regs, and other hassle. Like labour laws.
Not just with oil either. Everything! :(

Their owners are now in South America if that's what you mean, oil blending plant is still functioning in Gravesend Kent.

I've used the handy Comma App to find vehicle oil recommendations in the past.

Just looked at their site very interesting, recommended oil for the d3 2.7tdi is 20 quid for 5 litres and the recommended oil for the wifes audi 3.0tdi is 50 quid for 5 litres!
Now 20 quid seems to cheap and 50 quid seems to dear.
 
Get down to Halfords with your trade card, 25% off oils, additives and antifreeze 30% off filters.
 
My D2 has been leaving oil on drive for yonks. Can't get it booked in til my mate finishes another landy job. Just check dip stick and no sign of oil on stick. Scary. I need to chuck some oil in just for next month or two of local driving. Very short of cash and have 5litres or mannol 7909 diesel TDI 5w30 here. It won't do any harm to top her up with that for a while will it?

oh, really?! it was cheapest 5hit i could grab for wife's van, was just hoping it wouldn't bugger the engine! its cheap on ebay

Can i also ask... i have not seen any oil warning lights yet not a trace of oil on dipstick, even on very bottom (engine cold). Does this mean I have a faulty oil light/sensor?

5/30 synthetic is fine for TD5, we used to use Carlube. And you aren't planning to run the oil for very long.

As far as I know, oil warning light is to do with oil pressure, not level, on a vehicle that age, so it will only come on if oil pump fails, or you run out of oil completely.

I was only concerned that the ACEA number on the oil was C2 and i read that B2 is needed. obviously i am not looking for the best oil though just something to run for a while that wont do damage.
