Morning all,

Okay, so I reckon I have pretty much found the right oil for my needs, just wanted to double check a few things. Was planing on buying this, seems to be good price per liter. And the correct grade of oil I need.

What I am concerned about is that my landy is an ex military, this being the first oil change since she left them, the current oil in there is the mod stuff OMD 90. Is it okay for me to change it to what i am planing on buying, is it okay for it to mix with the remnants of the OMD 90 after I drain it?

Sorry if this is dumb questtion , haven't done anything like this before. Engine is a 300 TDI if that's relevent .

Its been a while since i had to buy oil for a vehicle Now i have an 87 LR90 with a 200tdi engine i've had to start 'topping it up' and can't believe the price of the stuff from my local garage. A 5L can is anything from £20-25 so this seems a half decent price, just need to think of where I can store it and the easiest/cleanest way to decant it!!
 
Yes price is why I am doing it myself, storage isn't a problem for me, lucky enough to have a double garage. But getting it out without making a mess is a good point. Maybe I can find a tap that fits on instead of the lid.
 
Can't see any harm in some of the old stuff mixing, shouldn't be much left if you drain it warm and leave it dripping for a decent length of time. Only to 'clean' the old stuff out would be to refill with cheaper oil, run (for a few hours worth) and empty again, don't use any proprietary engine flush, can open up a can of worms with that stuff!

I used cheap oil as a flush and filtered it afterwards and threw it back in the diesel tank of my 200tdi.
 
You will be fine mixing it with the old stuff

Personaly id check the specs of the cheap stuff before buying

Go to your local agricultural dealer or maybe somewhere that services diggers and plant (if you have one) they should do you a good deal on a 25 ltr drum and if its good enought for a 20 ton digger or 200 hp tractor its good enough for an old landy !

Your cheapest bet would be 10 w 30 super universal but any 10 w 40/50 or 15 w 30/40 will be fine ,i work at an agricultural dealer and we sell 10 w 30 semi synth super universal in 25 ltr for around £55 the drums are branded with the make of tractors we sell but its made by morris oils so its good stuff

Ive put 10 w 30 and 15 w 40 through my diesel cars for years with no problem and its in my disco right now
 
I would say 10/30 is going to be a tadge thin for a tdi, especially if the cam bearings are a little bit worn, which lets be honest is not exactly unusual.
I run shell 15/40 in mine but thats because I work on trucks!

Our morris 15w40 is £63 a 25 ltr top quality stuff. 10w40 is about £90
 
I really think people need to remember its a proper old simple tech engine and basically any old oil will do, just change it often.
To thin run away.
Syn crap run even faster!
 
Thanks for all the help, I checked the specs and went with the stuff from ebay, will definitely find my local agricultural dealer and have a chat with them for anything else like that I need.
