Hiya all.....

I had the extreme pleasure of getting my first disco a few weeks ago & have started to prepare her for off roading. I'm after some advice on engine oil grade. The engine is 2.5 Tdi 1992 reg with 154,000 miles racked up. The recommended oil grades for the engine range from 5W/30 to 25W/50......with the engine being quiet well run in, should I stay away from the higher viscosity oils ? Any advice would be most welcome.

Also, while I'm on.....any recomendations on the front/rear axle, transfer & gear box oils.

Axels and transfer case use EP80/90 GL4 (think you can use GL5 but there are stories of the additives in GL5 eating the brass, I use GL4 anyway cus its cheaper where I am).

For gearbox (depends which one you have, I guess you have the Lt77?) anyway for Lt77 use ATF Dextron 2 or 3 and for R380 use MTF94. FYI, if your reverse is by 1st gear then you have a LT77, if its under 5th you have an R380.

Usually the more wear the engine has the higher the viscosity, the viscosity range you write about is usually dependent on ambiente air temperature. For normal climate i.e England either 15W/40 or 10W/40 is recommended but make sure it meets the performance requirements as well, if your giving your engine some punishment use a high quality oil like Automotive Lubricants - Engine Oils - Multipurpose Greases - Aerosols - Morris Lubricants - UK , give them a ring and speak to their technical department and they will tell you everything you need to know. Lodexol Ultra Drive or Lodexol 80W/90 for the diffs and transfer box, gearbox on your year should take a product of theirs called liquimatic 33G. LR recommend checking the valve clearances every 24000 miles / 2 years might be worth you doing them, also the swivel pin housing oil needs replacing at the same interval. Engine oil change every 6000 miles / 6 months.

For the engine I use a CI-4 oil. The grade is important, not the make. For the main gearbox the recommendation is Texaco MTF94. If you can't get that a fully synthetic ATF DXIII is great. Or Castrol VMX 80w is good. For the rest a good EP90 or EP80w90 is fine, preferably GL5, or GL4 if you are worried about pennies.

The make is more important than you might think Jim, different oil companies use different additives and different types of polymers, some stay in grade for very long periods of time and some dont. The oil you use is good but if you buy something like halfords own brand then you can almost bet that it will not stay in grade as well. Halfords etc dont make oil obviously so what they do is offer their business to the best price buyer, often the price is screwed down so much that the only way the oil company can make money is to reduce the amount of additive and polymer they put in the oil, the oil will meet the grade in the can but will not meet the grade throughout the drain interval. Something to look out for bud.
