Hi i own a Defender 90 200 tdi H reg i have had an engine oil and filter change recently and in the last couple of weeks the oil has dropped from just below the high mark to just above the in mark on the dip stick is that normal to use that amount i have had a look in the air filter their is some slight oil in the filter. The last cause of my oil going was the head gasket which was done about six months ago. Before the oil change i was using some oil over a period of about 12 months i must of used a couple or so pints is that normal. My wagon chucks out a bit of smoke when you first start it up but other than that it sounds and pulls well. just one more thing the engine looks a bit wet on the dip stick side. If the problem gets worse can anybody help with a probable cause or ami worring to much about nothing any help i would be very gratefull regards Tony

Hi tony

I've not spent anytime on the 200tdi but alot on the 300tdi and it sounds like the turbo bearings could of gone, and this is where the oil would be going. Check the free play at the compressor wheel on the turbo if it's excessive that's probably your problem, also check for oil in the inlet manifold if there's alot there this would also point to the turbo. Hope I've been of some use!
