I'm currently rebuilding a 1966 2a and am a bit puzzled regarding the engine number. The number is 90618309A, and is a petrol engine. However when I look up engine numbers it states that 9061 should be a diesel engine. Also it has the name Bilchrome cast into the block. I understand that petrol engines should be 9016, which my previous Series 3 was.
Can anyone shed any light on this?

I don't think its impossible for someone to reuse a diesel block with petrol ancillaries but I don't know easy it would be to do.

I always thought it was the same block, as at one point LR would convert your petrol to a diesel

Same blocks for both
