My engine light came on a while ago and i've been driving with it on as the last time i took it to the garage for it to be done it came back on the next day and cost me 120 quid, so thought i'll drive it until it total knackers and stops working but it hasn't and i've just done a 400 mile round drive with out a problem except the engine light on.

Is there anything i can check my self to see if it's anything simple, is there away to test the lambda sensor to see if this this knackered, the reason i ask is i watched an episode of the garage on quest and they did a repair on a range rover with the engine light on, they changed the lambda sensor and fixed the problem.

Is there any checks i can do myself before i take it to a different garage, forgot to say i have a 2002, 1.8 petrol freelander, 3 door.

you own a obd car so why not buy a cheap scanner off ebay and check the codes yourself you can pick up elms cables for like £15 and the software is all online unless you want to pay for some and then when ever the eml light comes on you can save having to go to the garage

Thanks, i've just looked on ebay and they have quite a few different car fault code readers around £20, do you have one you reccomend, i'll order one it'll save me a trip to the garage....thanks

i have a elm 327 cable for universal cars
i have a F-super for all my fords
i have a Hawkeye for my Freelander

using a elm 327 cable with some software like scan xl pro or scan master should give you live engine data aswell as reading fault codes and you can record them all and save it all to the laptop

Has anyone tried the maxiscan ms300 fault code reader on a freelander mk1, will the ms300 work, i've read some good reviews that it worked and others that it didn't work on there cars.

I've watched some youtube videos reviews of the maxiscan ms300 and they seem to be positive, as any one used one and should i order it.

The engine light went of yesterday by itself, the maxiscan ms300 came today so i went and plug it in, it lit up as in youtube vids, then turned ignition on without statring engine, pressed enter then went through started up procedure and scan, it came back zero codes.

Went back in the house and read the manual then went and repeated the test but this time checked the other functions, when i disconnected this time my landrover will not start at all now, the sound i'm getting is a tttttttt but will not turn over, trying to sort one thing out i've knackered it further at least before when the engine light was on it drove.

Could using the maxiscan turned anything off or stopped anything from working so the car won't start.

The battery was flat, i tried jump starting it but it wouldn't start so took the battery out and charged it for 2 hours until charger said charged, started up when the battery was reinstalled.

I took it for a drive, the engine light came back on after 14 miles, when i put the maxiscan on to test it this time it says the following FAULT:01 under that PEND:00 then when i scroll to look at fault code it reads N/A then under that 01/01, i rescaned it and it came back saying the same thing.

These codes are not in the manual or on the disc that came with the scanner (the disc as no landrover on it), does anyone know what those codes mean as i'm still no wiser.

Do those codes mean that this scanner is not capable of reading the fault codes, should i buy another scanner.

Just thought i might need a new battery as why would the scanner zap all the power from the battery in about 2 minutes, would the battery cause the engine light to come on, i've just tried the car again an it starts up ok, do i need a new battery.
