Hi All,

I bought a Freelander 04plate TD4 about 6 weeks ago and I'm yet to get it on the road. so far I have had to have gear box out twice as once for the clutch and then I found the gearbox to be knackered too. Anyway it's all back together now but I have a power issue.

I've trawled through the site but nothing is a match for my symptoms. Starts fine every time, getting alot of white smoke (assuming too much fuel) Hot or Cold still the same.

Q1) whats the difference between the two Engine management lights? I have the one with the ! in the middle on?.......... I have connected it to an OBDII and it returns no faults. I did previously have both on but when I connected the dyagnostics it reset the other.

Q2) Looking for suggestions as I have no idea where to begin with the fault finding on the power loss issue having had no feed back from the dyagnostics. I am no Mechanic but I'll have a good go at anything - as mentioned I have managed to do the gearbox/Clutch....TWICE ;-(

Do you have access to diagnostic equipment able to view the live data? You could do with checking the low and high fuel pressure.

Ok so I swapped the cable in previous pic and the light has gone out I now have more power but not what I think it should have. (I've never driven it as bought it broken) so now that leaves the connector pictured with nowhere to go.
I still also have plenty of white smoke, I have cleaned egr valve and checked all hoses

The green connector looks like the official replacement harness for the high pressure fuel rail sensor. If that is what it is, it should be connected to the rail sensor

Ok great thank you that's where I have put it, so would the other be if I wasn't using the high pressure fuel rail or should it connected somewhere else? Possibly along the rail? I can't see anywhere to connect it

If you have the official HPFR sensor replacement harness. The green plug should be connected to the rail sensor. The old black plug can be tied up out the way. It won't be connected to anything in the E box anyway.

Thanks very much Nodge for baring with my ignorance. Going to try replacing the breather filter in the top of the rocker for the smoke, any other advice on that
 
White smoke is usually caused by a couple of things. Most likely is an injector not doing what it should correctly. You can try a cleaner through the system to see if that makes a difference.
Another cause of white smoke can be if the turbo seals are going. This is normally easy to determine as there will be wet oil in the boost pipework.
I suspect it's an injector though. It's worth clearing down the codes as not having the HPFR sensor connected will throw a code or two.
 
Find the thread on the fuel filter, water trap. Replace the fuel filter, engine breather filter etc
