Hi all,
Can any one help with this problem? I have recently changed my fuel filter about 4 weeks ago on my 2008 freelander2 4wd 2.2 diesel. It was a nightmare to start afterwards and ended up getting local mechanic out to get it running. Since then all was fine however last week it began playing up. After around 10 minutes of running and whilst driving the engine loses all power and shuts down now depending on my speed normally over 40mph their is enough momentum for the engine to then kick back in but anything less and it will not start. Yesterday whilst doing 20mph it cut out and would not start so called breakdown who came out after 45mins got to car and it just started with no more problems for rest of the day. Today doing 15mph having just joined motorway slip road going up hill car lost power and shut down, despite the worry of speeding cars and wagons behind me i left the car switched off for 20 mins got back in and it started up. Got on motorway and despite a couple of blips about 10mins appart it drove ok i have found that when it dies if i dip the clutch and apply max revs it coughs a splutters but then runs fine
 
Did you or the local mechanic bleed the system properly?
Not sure how you do it with the Freelander2, but with my old Td4 you used to have to press the accelerator pedal to the floor then start the engine, when the engine started back it off to about 2000 revs until it cleared. after 2 or 3 attempts at that it would have been bled properly then ran absolutely fine!
 
I can't really speak for the FL2 but it should have bled any air out by now. With the Td4 I just cycle the key a few times - pump runs for a minute or so each time and blasts the air through the system and back to the tank - you can hear it going.

If the problem is associated with changing the filter then I would be pulling the new filter off again and checking pipework, O-rings etc.

Yes the mechanic bled the system properly, the fl2 is an absolute nightmare to start after a new filter is fitted. As for checking the pipes i don't want to take them off as the system will have to be bled again and would need a mechanic to do it as it requires 2 people. I was wandering if it may be one of the sensors maybe the maf or a computer problem. I may disconnect the battery to see if it resets
 
No there is no warning lights, but a couple of times the dash says reduced engine performance however it goes off when the engine kicks back into life. The box is manual drive
 
Sounds like low pressure fuel pump is week.assuming no air lock,but double check your last job before the problem ,fuel filter no air leaks ,poor connections on snap ons . . .
 
Need to get fault codes read as there'll be some stores if it's displaying restricted performance

That should remove the guess work.

Low pressure pump is mechanical and part of the high pressure pump on a Freelander 2 which is why the system has to be manually bled after changing filter
 
Quick update - after playing up all week and getting more temperamental, cutting out in the worst possible places I booked the car in for a diagnostic test. The fault was found and turned out to be a loose wire on the crankshaft sensor. Fingers crossed all is now fixed
