There's no transponder chip in P38 fobs. You have the wrong guy helping you out.
If you're not careful this problem can cost you 3 or 4x what it should.
You don't even know if you need a new key or not.
Send the key & the becm to me & I'll sort it all out for you.

As for the key numbers, the only difference in key numbers is that you can't have 2 keys the same number sync'd at the same time. However, you can sync what ever key you have in your hand at that time.
I have 2 key one's with my P38.

So rick, looks like I've been well and truly stitched up. Re the key... The guy that come and run diagnosis for a fee of £50 said the transponder was missing and no other faults showing.but need a new key... He said he could get one off eBayy.and for £80 get it back on the road....feel like a mug :( I said id order a new one from RR, which I did today at a cost of £169....thanks for offering to help me out, can I PM you when the new key comes and send it off to you with the BECM if needed, happy to pay for your service Hun, I just want her back on the road x

Hi to all, Regards to key No. first does your p38 have electric seats? if so try setting the seats with the key on the No. one setting if no luck try setting the seats on the No. 2 setting which ever one sets the seats you will receive a message saying No. 1 set or No. two set then that is your key No. however since your key is not working does it matter if you order 1 or two, number 3 and four will not allow you to set the seats, also if the key is original the case will be either Black or dark grey, dark grey is No. 1 Black is No.2 but when you buy a new replacement it may well be black regardless. best of luck sillyboy

I would say the key 4 I have is dark grey rather than black.

Hi so the new key came :) and surprised but very happy to say it now, starts :) the new key still won't operate the central locking at the front, so still issues there, but just happy to drive it again!...next to sort the tracking, slow acceleration (at times) , creaky steering wheel when turning right and a diesel leak.. the list goes on but love her all the same :) thanks for all your help and advise :)

Cool. Result.

If you manually lock/unlock the doors from the inside front do any of the other locks respond?

Yeah I'm well happy it drives now :) ... , from inside, the drivers door will manually lock/unlock the back drivers side and the passenger side will manually lock/unlock back passenger side ...

So manually neither front door is affected?

Only 1 of the rear door unlocks? Weird. I would have thought it'd be all or none.

My suspicion was that the lock-motors have burnt out, possibly from RF interference but only 1 rear side at a time unlocking has confused me.
