Hi this is my first post here so please be gentle with me :)
I have a 1997 P38 2.5dse auto which i love, but at the moment it wont start.
the key fob and central locking has always been touchy and it has never unlocked or locked the passenger side door , but by replacing the fob batteries every few days, it has been working most of the time until now. The LED on the fob still lights up when i try to use it but it wont work so I have to manually use the key to open the car but when i try and start it, I just get engine disabled press remote....which does not work. I have the EKA code and have tried to use it but it also wont work:confused:
id appreciate any help or advise:)

Go over and introduce yourself then try a search.
Diagnostics may be needed. Never run a P38 with only one FOB and a dodgy one at that.

Passenger door is probably a burnt out motor. Check which RF receiver you have fitted.

The rest ... could just be a dodgy fob!

The fob is def dodgy and battered! I bought a refurb kit, replaced the buttons, battery cover etc but no joy ...I probably need to replace it, not sure how to go about it though ( can u tell im new ;) !)
I've got someone coming tomorrow to run diagnostics so hopefully can make some progress then...

take your v5 and id to dealer for £££160 new key, no key no car:eek:

Thanks, if I get time tomorrow, I'll def do that....even if that's not the problem right now, the fob is well battered and seen better days so will need replacing sooner or later :)

ok, so i had the key tested today, and was told that the transponder chip is missing, which is why it wont start the car. I called main dealer to order a new key and waiting for them to get back to me as there are several options, whatever that means...just a quick question will the new key need to be synced to the car & is it something i can do? Its just that the person i spoke to said i will need to bring the car in for it to be re-programmed to the new key....which is kind of difficult as the car is immobilized
thanks again for all your help :)

I believe you can sync the fobs yourself instructions in hand book or rave ,its the stealers trying to get more money out of you

Its a 1997, ...I thought you could sync the fobs yourself aswell, but wasnt sure...I'll have a look at rave, thanks

Too right!

Dead easy to synch although doesn't always work the first time. Only issue MIGHT be if the BECM & locks have ever been changed.

Ok thanks, apologies mozz...I only joined the site a couple of days ago and still working my way around...Im just reading your previous threads.i should of just looked at them first!! Pretty much everything Ive needed so far is right there  just one more thing though, is it right that I need to know what number key I need as was told I have to choose 1,2,3 or 4 and they are different prices...obviously I don't know what number I already have or need ! I'm praying that the BECM and locks haven't been changed....hopefully wont have to cross that bridge...

Key number is on the back of the key. As long as it isn't the same as the existing key it doesn't matter.

Someone on here said his dealer could only get Key 4.

I'd like to know what this chip missing in the key is all about.
There's no chip in the key other than the components to operate the central locking.

Hi, the guy that came round today put my key in a machine and said the transponder chip is missing...I really have no idea and going on pure trust....worried again now!
