hello. I have a 1908 109 defender ex MOD. As off lately the engine cuts of without apparent reason. Yesterday I was doing a 12 mile drive and after 8 miles or so the engine stopped. No strange sounds or anything obvious. After waiting for about 5 min by the side of the road I was able to restart and carried on like nothing ever happened. When I was about 100 yards from home, the engine cut off again... If I try to start straight away I can either get nothing from the car at all, as if the battery was dead, or you can hear the engine turning but nothing happens. Again if I leave it a few minutes, it restarts like nothing ever happened..

What do you think is happening?

Are you petrol or diesel engine.
On petrol check the electrical side first.
Distributor amplifier leads coil unit
Fuel check for leaks along the fuel line.
Diesel check fuel pump working okay
Is there any air getting in the fuel line.

sorry first post! it is diesel. I think fuel pump and air in the fuel may well be the issues. Does a snorkel limit the air intake?

Does sound like air in diesel or some blockage, I would check from the diesel pick up pipe in tank to the filter supply to injector pump, and use lift pump to see if any air come out

Very good point! Sounds like a job for the weekend!

Try a run with the fuel cap off just to make sure a vacuum isn’t building up in the tank.
If it starts again it’s probably not air in the line without bleeding.
Check the fuel shut off on the pump.
Check all lines for blockages including waste return system.

Thank you! I will do that
