Td5 discovery done 250000 miles still goes well and well locked after
Looks like head is coming off due to crack
Is it worth dropping piston out and ringing
Anyone know from experience will it be worth it or will it be still good
Had full service every 5000 from 4 years old

With that mileage, I would be thinking about a full overhaul, if the rest of the car is worth it, the minimum would be measure up the bores, big ends, mains and new rings, and maybe a camshaft, new chain and tensioners

The only thing that makes me hang onto it is the chassis is mint condition and it does what I want
What do you replace it with even good disco 3/4 can be money pits
Don’t know what to do

Just read that link they do appear to be a good engine but mine has done double that mileage but full service every 5000
Massive question 3/4 disco will out do a td 5 in every department so long as you have money to keep it going £1000 for cam belt fit

Out of interest what’s your thoughts on the future for big diesels I feel if minority get there way could be priced off road
Sadly this country tends to pander to minorities

If you read the forums the 3/4 engine don't have that good a rep, me I bought my 1999 D2 15 years ago, last year, it was a scrap or fix it year I fixed it and glad I did rather than buy a new set of problems, what year is yours I have 150,000 on the clock now

why not before you take the head off, have a compression test done dry and wet, and see if there is any great difference between the two set of readings, a big jump in the reading on the wet test means the ring a are worn then make the choice, as to how much you willing to do

Yes having one done crossed my mind the other day I will do ASAP
Think iam sticking with old girl
Like I say if some get there way £10000 td 4 could become worthless overnight

You could do the head on yours and see how it goes. If nothing else is broken - don't fix it. Save up some money for a replacement/recon engine at a later date. There will be loads of rotten D2s with low mileage engines for sale I would think.

Yes if I had the space I would buy one tomorrow even now
If putting it right cost £5000 it would still be a good cheap car
