Hi all - anyone know of a way I can clean my engine without access to a steam cleaner or a pit? If im going to have any chance of solving this oil leak Ill need to clean it all up first. I was thinking, using something like Brake cleaner to spray on the engine then a pressure washer afterwards?

Anyone done this before DIY style?
 
so can i just goto my local car wash, pop the bonnet and go nuts with a jet wash? or is there anywhere to avoid? is anywhere going to cause damage?

i too have the aftermath of the previous owners oil leak
 
When cleaning with gunk etc does it stain the drive when being washed off? I have a concrete drive and don't really want to make a mess of that yet ;)

You spray on, use an old paint brush on thicker parts, leave for a little while and then hose off, be careful around the electrical bits and as mentioned spray a bit of WD40 before and after especially if its a V8, mine ever so slightly hunted for a minute after but I left the engine running and the bonnet up until it was bone dry and everythings been fine since.

I couldn't believe the difference it made for so little time and effort and I did my allroad afterwards, they are now so clean you could eat your dinner off them.

I did it on the mother in laws drive and there wasnt a bit of mess afterwards and she is soooo fussy about that kind of thing.

I couldn't recommend it enough.

What I do after been swimming and its all mucky is let the mud dry
Use a toothbrush to wipe off dry mud then a splash off wd40 on starter , battery , fuel pump and any other electrical connections
Then a good spray off degreaser everywhere else
And then jet wash and wd on connections again

Would it not be better to not let the mud dry?

When finishing on pay and play sites we used to stop off at the local jetwash on the way home to get the worse off before the mud and crap dried as it came off so much easier.
 
Use one of those ARC Jetwashes with the big drain underneath and nobody has ever said anything. :)
