Can anyone help me as to what this means? I've seen it wrote on an advert for a couple of ex MOD 110s for sale and I haven't a clue what it means. Does it mean the engine is knackered and needs a new one, or does it mean it's just breathing a bit more then normal?

Sounds like they are referring to higher than normal crankcase pressure. Often caused by worn piston rings. Ex-MoD engines MAY have lots and lots of running hours (at idle) but not have covered huge miles.
Not a massive problem if you're prepared to pay for a rebore/rebuild, or if it's not too bad. Look for oil that has been pushed out of the dipstick tube - covering the chassis rail on that side. An old test is to take the rocker breather off when running and look for pressure - cover it with your hand and feel the resistance.

If its an ex FFR it will have high engine hours due to sitting at fast idle for long periods to charge radio batteries (heard that on a military vehicle forum im on). Early 2.5s only have a single breather (like my engine), on my brothers 2.5, which was made a year later it has a second crankcase breather
 
Yes they do leave ffr vehicles running to keep the batteries charged so the radios don't lose power and have to be reset. I've seen them idling for 8 or 9 hours easily.
