Hi all,

I need to swap the engine block on my S2A and am looking for a replacement. I am a total beginner to this sort of thing and want to make sure I get it right, starting with finding a replacement that fits (preferably an identical one, to minimise potential confusion...). I have been looking here: http://www.glencoyne.co.uk/engno.htm

Would any block with the same volume and number of bearings fit? What about compression? Is that determined by the block or the head?

My engine is a 251xxxxxx
 
Hi Martin, welcome to Landyzone. You will be lucky to find a series IIA engine block in good nick. If you can't find one and you don't want to recon your original you'd be better looking for a 5 bearing series 3 engine. As to your questions, yes Any block will do as long as it is the correct fuel type. The head determine the compression ratio.

yours is a 3 bearing block ,so any 2.25 3 bearing block will do they are all identical petrol or diesel,
why do you need a new block
the blocks can be bored to plus 60 as long as pistons are available then linered and put back to standard,any block (though your more likely to get a part or full engine) must have a complete set of main bearing caps

Connecting rod came loose and punched a big hole in the block. Here’s a picture of it:
Bought a replacement engine only to discover a crack in its block when I removed the manifold.

Could you dumb this bit down for me, please? How and why would this be done?

Is it out of the question to reuse the caps from one of the engines I have? (in case I find an otherwise good block with missing caps)
 
Not quite sure all 2.25 blocks are the same....my mate did this years ago...he got an early 2.25 block...something different about it...cant remember what...but he could not use it...as ACR...Roland will tell you.

they are the same excepting the 3 brg and 5brg difference, in factyou can take an early 2.25 petrol piston and rod and it will bolt into a 300tdi,wouldnt be much use but that shows how little changed
 
James are the engine block and caps line bored as an assembly hence having to be kept on same engine block and same orientation.If I recall caps have numbers on that have to match up.
