My 2000 1.8 Freelander has a failed an emissions test with a Lambda of 1.07 (needs to be 0.97 to 1.03) & a CO of .61% (needs to be below .3%).

Will I have to go to a main dealer or can any competent mechanic solve this ?

Just put a couple of doses of injector cleaner thru it and give it a good blast.

Then, once yu have fixed the HGF, it will fly thru an MOT. :D

PM northern islander or irish rover - they know their stuff and might be able to help - NI particularly - wot he doesnt know about 1.8K series lumps..........

just dont ask him about "the window problem" :bolt:

Serviced ?. A mate & I changed the head, fitted new plugs, cleaned points etc & it runs really well. He worked for LR when they built mine so he feel guilty !. I am wondering if the apparently easily damaged oxy sensor was damaged.

Not only does my dealer charge a fortune but has also been known to give bad advice in order to extract money. Its hasn't been dealer serviced in years as the previous owner used a local non Landy garage.

Are there many other things that could cause the problem. With a diagnostic at £120 I am wondering whether to get an Oxy sensor & some injector cleaner.

ok let me re-phrase that when were the filters last changed?

edit: hooooollddddd up since when did anything post 1990 have fecking points!!!! whats next a carbratooter???? dynamo???? crank handle to start it?

Get some redex from your local topaz or halfords. It's good stuff, i've used it before. It'll de-coke your injectors, cylinders etc.

I find it to be very useful stuff. Saves taking the head off and doing a manual de-coke or refurbing the injectors.

Ok so, put me out my misery then! What would you do? Which filters would you change? In tank pump filter?

nope first off i would check the air filter i couldn't tell you how many cars have failed the MOT on high emission due to a ****ted up airfilter!

Filters as in fuel & air - definitely not for three years !.

It may not have points but it does have a rotor arm - if it had points I wouldn't be in this mess !. Would an air filter effect it that much ?.

Redex - what memories !. Remove a plug, thimble full of redex & wait for the neighbours to call the fire brigade.

I am trying to avoid changing lots of bits only to find that I have changed the wrong bits. Emissions are a pain in that the only way that know something has worked is by a retest.

The head & pistons are beautifully clean or they were 3 months ago.

the guy wants to cut corners - no point in helping.

You dont cut corners with a 1.8 unless you are either stupid or a masochist
