First of all hi to all, I'm Jim and a recent freelander owner, got a couple of questions which I hope you guys (and gals) can help me with, basically the MAF is disconnected (runs fine), when i connect the MAF it wouldn't pull a hen off its eggs (can get it to rev to 4500):(, I have connected up my Autel MS509 to it, and it gives me some of the engine sensor readings (MAP), but it doesn't give me the MAF or fuel pressure rail readings, my question is if I buy an ELM 327, will it give me the MAF and fuel rail readings?
By the way it's a TD4.

No it wont, best to buy a new MAF [DONT GET THE BOSCH WUN] as they cost a lot and go outa spec at around 25k miles get the Pierburgh with a synergy 2 [as the PIERBURGH is not a complete compatible] However there was a thread on this forum recent about a Pierburgh that was a straight swap. . . . . .do a search :)
 
Where in Ireland are you? I think i have a spare MAF here if your close enough and want to give it a try?
 
Ming, thanks for letting me know that it wouldn't work, you've saved me buying an elm 327 that i'd rarely use.

Matt_Td4 thanks for the offer, but I'm in Co.Cavan (tight ass gits and all!!! lol).

Honestly, I don't know what to think is wrong, plenty of posts where people have changed the maf, and to no avail, I'm suspicous of the map sensor and want to test it again, also I want to get a new pcv valve and try it also, have heard both of these aswell as the maf can cause similar symptoms.

look for wot its worth, even LR cannot tell if the MAF is out of spec, this is a large subject so i will not dwell onnit, best to go to Rover Ronns web site and have a read ,then all will become a lot clearer :) the so called ELM is ok for fault codes [generic] but the MAF being an anolog to digi system is not incorperated . . . .
 
i can confirm that the elm 327 will read the MAF and IAT but not the fuel pressure rail sensor that's using scanxl and my landy is on a 03 plate. i don't know how accurate it is

Oh i see. . . . .so will it tell you if its in spec ? if the answer is yes then we had better tell Rover Ron ,can it also read the gaylander alarm system and ABS ? LIVE AND LEARN :)
 
Just trying to be helpful. if you have the rave cd you have the technical info required. And if you are bright you can make your own tuning module, just like Ron and if you are right with people and don't take the pxxs out of them they help you just like Ron.

Personally I thought the device was very limited. I've since tried it on other cars, and found it only covers generic values. Depends if the manufacturer has added the extra stuff to make it compatable with odbii, or just kept to the legal minimum requirements.

um this is LZ if you think i'm takin the **** then i can assure you i'm an ickle angel compared to sum on ear. . . . .look jibb jabb your intensions were well ment and i respect that , the fact that yer an Earthling and a bit thick is not your fault. . . . .its like me saying the doors on the gaylander dont fall orft wens wet. . . .every wun knows its bollicks ;)
 
Ok, thanks jababjaws for confirming that it will give me the MAF readings, my only concern is that your trying it on a 2003 model.

Hippo, your running a 2001 petrol model, hence should be compatible (yes I know I'm being anal here, just don't want to spend money unecesseraly (can't remember how to spell it)). I do notice that your also using the program on a peugeot 207, I connected my Autel ms509 to a 2001 peugeot 206(1.4 petrol) at the weekend, it only gave me the rpm, maybe I should bite the bullet and just get the ELM.

Really appreciate all your help so far, any other comments are more than welcome.

From what I know from reading up on this when buying the elm 327, there's original units that work, and crap slitty ones which are fake. Hence the cheap ones on ebay. The requirements for odbii are formal, and have to be followed by the manufacturers. Here's the big problem: most manufacturers only provide the odbii info for the minimum requirements. Hence you can pick up things like water temp, engine revs etc which seem to be part of the min spec. Not sure what the min spec is, but it's no where near what we would like. Example of that is only being able to see data for 1 of 6 cylinders in my engine. I drive hired cars for work, and plug in the elm every time I get a different one. The pug's not mine, another hired car. Pug's, fords, vauxhall's that I've tampered, sorry tested, all seem to be the same. Reduced data. A real let down but I guess they're protecting their garages. They will all give faults codes though, but never found a car with a code. I've got an elm 327 usb with scanxl. I don't really use it. The computer versions allow you to collect data and form a graph, if you have the right software. My advise would be to buy a hand held unit rather than pc based. But some prefer the pc graphs. Car mechanics did a recent test on hand readers. I have a copy of this if you need it.
 
well said hippo. . . . .getting back to the original MAF its a big subject so going on to the Rover Rons web site will give all the info you will require on the subject, you dont have to buy his products ,but the advice is all free with no bull**** , :)
