Hi all
having just stripped down the electric window mechanism in my 2000 Disco 2, I was amazed at how much water came out of the motor!!
I pulled the armature forward a bit and drained out what I could, which was a lot! I then connected it up to a batt and it spins fine in both directions.
But I would like ideally to be able to dry it out and then grease it.
I am not happay about pulling the armature any further forward as I think we would be into unfixable damage, so I'd like to dry it first. I thought about pouring a bit of meths into it, or even better some ethanol, if I could find some, to absorb the water and then draining it off and letting it dry. but I am concerned about it removing the last of any grease that may still be there, to say nothing of a fire risk on starting it up again!
So wondering if it is possible to buy spray grease that I could spray in next to the armature. I appreciate this would be a bit vague and that it would have to be able to conduct electricity in order for the motor to continue to work.
I am also self-isolating which doesn't help.
Does anyone have any ideas? I have never bought stuff like this before although I have all sorts of other greases and oils to hand.
cheers
Stan

Drill a small hole at the lowest point to allow any future water ingress to drain & then leave it alone?

Did think of that but have tried this before. It is amazing how big a hole has to be before it can defeat surface tension and actually allow water to leave! Also cannot see into housing so no idea where to be sure of not damaging anything when I drill. It does come with a weird 90 degree tube so they do expect it to get water in it. Also the seal at the top of the motor is pretty sh!t. Might just use a bit of sikaflex or summat to seal it and also put some sort of "spray dodger" inside the door frame made of the same sort of plastic as the moisture barrier that is already there. What is interesting is to try and work out how it got in there. Have never waded it so have to assume that somehow it is rainwater or condensation. But the rest of the inside of the door is clean and dry. Weird.o_O

I have used Wd40 brand spray grease before, worked fine to bodge and extend the life of my a frame ball joint with split boot, on my RRC. It does dry to a sticky consistency mind, so its not as good as proper lithium grease to my mind. You can warm that up and inject it with a syringe also.

Thanks for this! Just got to get myself a syringe now. Any one mainlining out there can give me a tip for a source?:)

White lithium spray grease? I use a WD40 branded one with an integral straw.
Another option might be ACF50. It penetrates really well and keeps stuff lubricated and corrosion free.

Thanks both!
I am tempted to say to anyone with an LR with electric windows, that taking them out draining them tightening up the bolts to the quadrants and lubing the motor and the pivot on the quadrant is good maintenance. But it is such a pain to get at!
Yet again, something that works until it doesn't. :(
(Still got the rear one on wifey's Pluriel to mend for the third time. First nearside went, then offside, now nearside again. And others "never have any trouble!":(:p)

Syringes & blunt needles off ebay. You may be better with the type that don't have the black rubbery thing on the end of the plunger.
I use them for injecting pilchard oil into pike deadbaits & the oil breaks the rubbery stuff down very quickly. Don't know how they fare with car oil & greases.
The ones in the link are just plastic.
The blunt needles are easily sharpened if necessary by using a file at an angle.
Got them from this seller: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Syringes...l-or-5ml-10ml-Plastic-KD-JECT-CE/254202701608

Sharp or blunt I just need a bit of a needle to get the fluid down past the armature once pulled a bit forward. you really need to have the motor in your hand to understand what I mean! A nylon tube on an aerosol would do I think!
Must search for where I can get this stuff as we are still self-isolating. But it isn't urgent as it will just be a spare.
Am I the only one who keeps such stuff?
Still glad I did as I now have a fully functionning window on my D2!

I assume that you are concerned about grease getting into the contacts in the electric motor and preventing it working. If so, I think as long as you don't use a dielectric silicone grease you should have no issues.

Thanks for that. Not that I have any idea what a dielectric silcone is. way above my pay grade! But I don't have none so no probs!
Cheers! as Neilly would say"

Dielectric = non-conductive
Right! So what I'll do is use my meter to see how much resistance there is to any grease I try to use and see what it reads.
That could be fun! Wonder if lithium conducts electric!
(Don't pay too much attention to me tonight, wedding anniversary means I am drunk in charge of my keyboard!)
Please don't think i am taking the pish!!!
