morning all,
had an issues this morning, put my dipped lights on , fine all ok,,, then turned them off but they stayed on , no tick tock from indicators either, no paused front wiper, no rear wiper, seat belt warning flashing on and off as well. Driving along with the lights switched off the dash did flicker on and off with a 'ticking' coming from under the passenger seat. ?? any ideas ?? relay issue or expensice trip to dealer ???

Get your nose in the engine compartment fusebox and smell for burning, if so, strip it out and have a look inside (underneath). They are prone to corrosion and can cause similar faults to a duff BECM.

cheers chap, just started up again and alls well, ,,,soooooo maybe a loose connection or fuse box issue rather than the BECM ,, will let you know the out come,,,, thanks again

Some say that the close proximity to the coolant header tank could allow vapour, which has antifreeze content, to come in contact with the PCB in the fusebox and corrode it, this can cause tracking across the PCB and overheating inside-hence the "Sniff" test initially. I think a new fusebox is around 90-100 quid-lot less than a BECM.

bad news chaps , got back to the car park and was 'locked' out , hazards flashing once every 2 mins'ish,, kept trying the central locing and it suddenly opened, drove away ok, lights switched off but were on, indicator tick not working, wipers failing ......

I'm assuming that I have a BECM gone kaput, this maybe because I also have pink fluid in the drivers foot well , my coolant is,,,,,,,,,,, pink :-( ,, could it have flooded the BECM uder the drivers seat ??..............

Car currently having a rest with Stratstone ,,, my wallet about to be emptied :-(

BECM's just hate water, even an over enthusiastic interior valeter can wreck them. Hard to see how water/coolant could run uphill into the unit though from the carpet. Maybe BBA Reman could repair it. New one is going to cost around £700 ish fitted-add to this cost of repairing the leak (Heater "O" rings??)OUCH!!
If it's any consolation-"Been there, got the T shirt"

thanks irish,,,will post the disagnosis here, .... retreating to fridge for a cold beer,,, maybe more than one ,,,,,,, :-(

oh 'bugger' stratstone just got back to me, O rings problem , flooded my foot well and in turn shorted out the BECM , they are quoting 8 hours labour + parts + £1000 for new BECM as its 'shorted out' ,,,, total £2K ,, not good, the motors only worth around 7.5K !

any ideas chaps ??????

"O" rings, pain in the ass to do, low part cost but no reason why you can't DIY.
BECM-they are ripping you off, you could send the unit to BBA Reman to see if they can repair it first or Carelect in Hampshire-that would be a fraction of the cost of a new unit.
Have a look on Range Rovers for info on the "O" ring replacement.
I feel sorry for you Bud. but things may not be as bad as they seem-stay positive and get the motor bought back home or where you can fix it.

The 'O' rings will take about 3.5 hours from start to finish, plus 3.00 GBP for parts and a few quid for a long Phillips screwdriver to get to the heater O ring screw.

A S/Hand BECM probably about 300.00 GBP Max (check Ebay prices), plus the cost of a Fault-mate Extreme 600.00 GBP to set it up and re-program alarm plus a few other bits.

Total of less than a grand and no more stealer's fees for fault finding again....:D

o rings can be done in 1.25 hours-shortcut method, plus before condemning the bcem check that there is no corrosion on either right hand kick panel earths or plugs on bcem- I suffered coolant leak and dreaded the fact that weird things started happening to wipers and headlight wash. cleaned the plugs and earths and not an issue
