Hello,

I've pretty much finished putting my landy back together after a galvanised chassis, and am very keen to get it MOT'd as am due to be moving in about a month.

I've got a few issues with the electrics, though.

1)
I'm not convinced I have the connectors connected up properly in the engine bay. Mine is a 1992 200tdi 90, so if anyone has similar, I'd very much appreciate some pointers on how the different connectors go together both in the engine bay, and also three connectors behind the dash - I have a 4 way connector (with one blank)in the engine bay that goes through to the dash and has three blade connectors - one with 2 green (which i understand is 12v ignition live), a brown and a green and brown (need to confirm the last).

2) Perhaps as a result of 1, My left hand side (front and back) doesn't have working indicators or side lights. I've checked fuses which seem to be fine. The other weird thing is, if i turn the left indicator on, the telltale on the dash flashes. If i turn right I get one flash of the trailer telltale, and thats it - no indicator telltale flashing.

I've been messing around the last few hours and have hit a bit of a dead end with it.

I saw some useful info on lr4x4 - http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=25376 I tried connecting up live and left, and i get nothing - connecting up right hand side I see all indicators work. I've also checked the voltage at the end of loom, and there's nothing.

Does anyone know the route the wiring takes? for example does the wire from the hazard switch go straight to the lights?

Hi , am still putting mine back together after a rebuild will have a look in the morning for you mines a 200tdi 110 but should be the same. Is the 4 way connector a black moulded rubber plug ? Green is ignition switched live , brown direct feed from battery and green brown is switch to reverse lamp according to this http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=13675 I think that plug goes into the chassis harness , my dash is all still apart so if you can tell me which connectors you need help with I will have a look and try and help.

Thanks....

The connectors I have is a 10 way connector from the bulkhead loom which at the moment I have two 4 way connectors going into it and a single connector (need to confirm colour).

There's then a thick black white connector from the bulkhead loom that at the moment I have plugged into the chassis loom that goes to the back for the heated rear window....not sure if that's right or not.

Yes, the 4 way I mentioned in first post is a moulded one that goes straight through to dash as 3 blade connectors that I cant see where they go. I have the connectors for temperature and fuel gauges so isn't for them....

I think the 10 way connector if its in the dash ,which might have a single white wired connector coming out of the back is for the dash gauges and the rear heated screen loom plugs in to it. If its the one I'm thinking of it has green ,green/black, purple , white, red , red/white, white/grey, light green/blue, brown , black wires coming out of it. If you can post some pics up of the plugs that might help. The thick black white connector is that in the engine bay ?

The ones I was talking about are all in the engine bay - one of them then passes through into the cab behind the dash with 3 blade connectors

I do have a wiring diagram, however there's some colours on the car that I can't match with the diagram.

The three blades I have at the dash are these:

Red/green, Brown/green and solid green

I also have these which for completeness are for the engine temperature and fuel level. Connected up these seem to work :

The other end of those three blades go to this connector in the engine bay. The colours either side match (so I assume correct), but obviously the other end isn't connected to anything:

I then have this which isn;'t currently connected:

which has this layout:

I've got an unconnected single white with orange trace. i've read that this is power for the air conditioning pump (which I don't have), if that's right it being disconnected is fine :)

This is the ten way connector from the main loom that I currently have two 4 way connectors and a single green connected into it. The colours between the 10 way and 4ways match, so again my assumption is that it's right, however I'm having issues with electrics so it could well be wrong!

I have a single green/brown from the loom connected to green/brown from the reverse switch : It leaves two male connectors unconnected, but i can't see where they go:

I have this from the main loom that includes the thick white/black cable I believe is for the heated rear window:

Finally I have this connector over near the heater:

The heater is connected up, as is the windscreen washer pump, I can't see any other connectors over there that this will plug into.

You should be able to see all photos at : http://garethe.imgur.com/

Many thanks again

The 1st pic wires are for the rear wash wipe, the 2nd pic are for the clocks the 4th isn't connected on mine the white/yellow wire on that is to tell when the handbrake is on. The 2 single wires green/brown and green are for the reverse light I think, they go into the multiplugs.

Thank you :)

The 1st pic wires are for the rear wash wipe,
Now you've written that - it makes sense.

The 2 single wires green/brown and green are for the reverse light I think, they go into the multiplugs.
Do you know which multiplug?

You need BS-AU7 colours.

I'll take a look - but it was more the combination of plugs and whether they're correct - the main reason I'm asking is the issues I'm having with the indicators on the right hand side - I think there's a general issue with indicators given the funny behaviour with the telltale lights

The green brown goes as you've got it the two green I will have a look in the morning for you, but I think there is only two options for the green wires to go in but I will check in the morning for you. Have you earthed your lights each corner individually, as in front drivers side indicator, side light, head light joined the three earths together too an earth point ? Then the same for the other 3 corners.

The white/orange wire isn't connected on mine the 2 green wires I connected to the multi plugs the one with the green/brown into the multiplug with the white/yellow wire in it and the other green into the other multi plug with a spare green.

Thanks.....that helped....however I still don't have working left indicators nor do I have dash lights anymore. I'm going to check side lights fuse tomorrow ..... I'm hoping the left side lights supply to the dash lights (for the clocks)....and I also hope I stumble across the indicators issues as I need it motd in the next few weeks, as am moving at the end of September :(

If anyone near Southampton fancies a puzzle (why don't the indicators work) then give me a shout, I can supply drinks and bacon sarnies :)

There's quite a few earths behind the dash have you checked all those are attached ? I also think I read somewhere that a dodgy hazard switch can cause funny things to happen with the indicators.

As above, pull the hazard switch out. You should see the green red(left) and green white (right) indicator connections. The switch can cause indicator faults - and you can use a meter of test lamp to check the circuit to the indicator wiring in the wing.

So the issue with dash lights was a fuse luckily.

I've taken the switch off, and when I connect up via a fused wire the purple (permanent 12v) and right hand indicators I get the front and back right hand indicators plus the side indicator. I don't get the telltale on the dash.

When I do the right hand I get only the telltale.

I went out this morning before work and I think the rear left indicator could be an earth fault there - I will take a good earth straight from battery to verify this evening.

As far as I can see i have all the earth behind the dash correct, the telltale on the switch works - as far as I can see that's the only earth related to the hazard switch

Sounds like a hazard switch fault to me. Do you get all indicators on when you operate the hazard switch? This at least tests the wiring to all the lamp units.

So, lots of messing yesterday resulted in this:
Left hand indicators - the rear indicator had a faulty bulb holder. I cleaned it up and it was fine.
Front : the earth didn't seem to be suitable (I had checked contiuity earlier, however perhaps something has moved since then. I ran a new earth and all is fine.

Right hand indicator (the issue was the telltale didn't show). Something was wrong with the piece that goes into the dash - I had a spare dash so put that in instead and that now seems fine.

I need to confirm the reverse & fog lights work, but it seems I'm on the home stretch. Many thanks to everyone who's responded :)
