my local dealer charges £120 inc vat for a diagnostic readout these days

there does seem to be some serious lacking of actual expertise these days from some garages , glorified part changers .

totally agree regarding in getting the codes read by a land rover dealer, with the print out that can at least be presented to the original garage , or wait till they inspect it and see if they come up with the same conclusion of the dealer

would have thought after spending out some £1600 quid there's a warranty , any decent garage would at least give a time on there work , otherwise it's the attitude of bodget and scarper

have been reading regarding the earth strap that can sometimes cause issues , where an extra one is installed , but with all due respect ur considerably more knowledgeable when it comes to this model :D
Main dealer diagnostic should include clearing and looking at codes as well as firmware versions. LR have a policy on fixed price cheaper labour for older vehicles as well as fixed diagnostic price. Always handy as a backup. They should also perform a visual inspection but that's not heavily intrusive. Some may not do this as it depends on the fault or nature of it. If the crank is snapped then turning it would be enough. I agree it is a lot of money and disappointing it's happened but it could be an easy fix. Won't know until she contacts the garage. I don't think a main computer is cheap. £700 springs to mind but don't know where I got that from.

There have been many issues relating to low battery volts due to ageing batteries and earth straps. To be frank if the earth strap isn't performing then it needs fixed. It's popular across a lot of big cars these days to add an additional earth.
 
Okay, so my 'add in' to this young ladies issue is this...some folks are suggesting buying a 'buckshee' code reader...from what I gather and understand only a Hawkeye or that other one that slips my memory is an option for the DIYer.....

I would suggest, that rather than take it to a 'stealership' employ the 'wizardry' of a recommended auto diagnostic electrician....If the battery is good (he or she) should check it then move forward from there...clear erroneous codes and then see if that helps initially etc etc...These 'Turkeys' at the place that carried out this work are obviously not up to the job. Paying that much and not getting a result is not good enough and quite frankly does them no good in the long run and leaves our member in the shi7 financially and without her wheels that she needs to get about!!

Name this garage...we need to know...strength in numbers I feel.......maybe not a lynching....Just Yet!!

it is abit if a minefield regarding diagnostic readers , was it nanocom u was thinking of , , i personally bought the iid which was £400 and have found it to be extremely good, will read and clear dtcs, reflash ecus, calibrate the entire suspension system inc being able to adjust suspension after new height sensors are fitted , normally this can only be done with a T4 , also can turn on and off ccf files .

alas one of the hardest things is finding an independent garage with the expertise, by taking it to a dealer at least the original garage can't argue with the report of errors

they could have checked the battery but if the earth is bad will still show faults, so easy to test with a multimeter eternity the battery and casing

think like ur good self were always disgusted when someone is left in the lurch , hopefully the garage will agree to take it back and fix it for free

but take it to the dealers first for a full report , before they touch it again

with the power of forums it's surprising how quickly everyone learns of a bad garage , so will be interesting to see who they are

agree, would be good to get land rover to do a full diagnostic and health check before going back to the original garage , that way there's proof of what's wrong and also will know if the garage starts the BS

would be wonderful if the fix is a worn out earth strap
 
Hippo has given good advice. The dealer will have the factory diagnostics and if you are lucky their technician will have seen the problem before and will have a clue how to solve it.
A code reader is only useful in the hands of someone who knows how to use it, particularly when it comes to abstract electrical issues. As mentioned by others codes are just symptoms and
don't necessarily show the specific problem.
I had a misfire issue with my V6 Hippo last year and the codes showed an electrical problem with a particular cylinder that started a systematic elimination of possible problems. In my case it did lead to the ECU but that was the last thing in the sequence of possible problems. Everything else had been discounted by the time that step was taken.

Hang on a bit. Before everybody joins a queue to burn down the garage in question, Rachel hasn't yet given them a chance to look into it further. After changing the ECU the car worked ok and was so for 3 weeks so the garage thought they had fixed the problem. Without seeing the bill, we don't know exactly what was done for the £1600+ . As others have said, the po needs to go back to the garage and politely explain that the problems have returned. If after that they cannot fix it or want to charge a lot of money, then get an independant report.

As a diagnostic, if hooked up with jump leads to another vehicle, does the extra juice overcome the starting issue?
You can then be fairly sure you have either got earthing or battery problems.

Is it just me or am I susceptible to subliminal advertising....I have just ordered a 'Juicing Machine', an 'Ab Blaster' and a "Rowing Machine'.....

Hi I to think it is a earth problem or a voltage problem, I would also try starting it with jump leads off another car if it starts the battery or alternator, might be the problem as they may have charged the battery when doing the work 3 weeks ago but if there is a small problem it might just be showing up, if not try connecting earth jump lead to a good earth on engine , and then if that does not work look for a earth point on gearbox,and other parts that might not be getting a good earth if starts with lead at one of these points then it is a bad earth to that point, Please let us all know if you find the answer to the problem as a forum we only all learn more if we get the results back
